I am anti caravan!!! I hate the damn things...especially living on the Isle Of Wight, they are like the plague , every summer the roads are clogged up with People driving Volvo's towing these hideous tin boxes around country lanes at 10 or 20 miles per hour...AGHHHH.
What would possess someone to live in one of these little tin boxes is beyond me...you cant even sit down for a cr*p for gawds sake. The bed is a table with a mattress on it and the bedroom/lounge/kitchen would fit under my stairs. They are cold when its cold and like ovens when it is warm.
Caravans are for anoraks who will not pay for the niceities in life and who think they can drive HGV's when clearly they cannot.

This is a serious discussion, if you wish to rant about such matters please do it in the Off Topic forum or in your local bar.

I suspect, that if a straw poll was taken in the High Street, many people would not realise, or know that there are speed limits in place for vehicles other than cars, and that this probably adds to the overall problems of 'hold ups.'
eg Heavy trucks are limited to 40 mph and every thing else, other than cars, 50 mph on a regular main road with a posted 60 mph limit.
Likewise on dual carriageways, only cars can do 70, all else 60, apart from heavy trucks again, which are limited to 50
The same 'ratio' though doesn't apply to Motorways...all cars, buses/coaches, and goods vehicles can happily do 70, but all of a sudden heavy trucks, and caravans are down to 60.
(The above is if my memory serves me right!)

Been a firefighter for thirty years( now retired) to hear the expression about a towed caravan seeing off the boy racers at the lights saddens me. I spent all my service hurtling around with a thirteen ton truck with tyres groaning ... but for emergencies only ! ... In my own time I drive sedately because I have seen too often the results of "macho " men trying to prove their superiority(in their minds only) on the road and the thought of what a badly driven car and caravan(and that includes badly loaded) can do frightens me to death. I`ve seen it too often.
My old (late) Granma used to say " better 5 minutes late in this life than fifty years too early in the next ! "..... not wrong.

I've moved the thread to the Off-Topic area. Mikeact's initial question was a fair one but I feel the balance of the thread has moved away from the initial intention!

You wouldn't want a FIRE Engine keeping to the speed limit if your house was on fire or you where trapped in a car after a road traffic accident would you Question

I thought it was an odd comment too. Did aj2052 realise that this thirteen ton truck was a fire engine? Laughing

PTWs seem to be omitted from your memory.

I think he was talking about Powered Two Wheelers with reference to the comment "on dual carriageways, only cars can do 70". However, to be pedantic, many of these motor bicycles can't reach 70 MPH... :P

Yes I do realise its a fire engine, and also realise that a 13 Ton truck with tyres groaning is a dam sight more dangerous than a caravan, It also reminds me vivadly of the gentlemen patiently waiting to turn right at traffic lights i think in birmingham who was killed by a fire engine that could not stop. I also accept that there is also badly matched and inexperienced caravaners, but then I do take a balanced view and see both sides.

It doesn't appear balanced from here! Fire Engine drivers are trained to handle their vehicles. Accidents will always happen but given the amount of calls they attend they are a rare occurrence.
