pocketgpsworld.comTomTom have confirmed that supplies of their new x20 devices have begun shipping. Initially only the top of the range 720 model will be available. This features full mapping of Western Europe supplied by TeleAtlas and has an esitmated retail prices of £329.99 inc VAT.

We understand that the first shipment has limited quantities of the device so if you want one you'll have to be quick. No news on when it's cheaper brother the 520 with a single regional map will become available as yet.

The x20's bring a number of new features to the GO platform including voice operation, custom cursors, a movable info bar (at last!), MapShare, and many detail improvements from TeleAtlas including building layout shading in some urban areas.

We've had one of these units for testing for a few months now so if you have any questions ask away in this thread. We'll have a preview available shortly and will be releasing a full review as soon as we get our hands on a retail specification unit.

For anyone that is interested, here is a direct link to the U.S. TomTom Go 720 product page (gives the low-down on all the specs etc).

:D How does the Text to Speech compare with the 910, my understanding is that the file sizes have been drastically reduced, hopefully this hasn't had an impact on the quality.

Rolling Eyes Dare I ask...mmmh...any update on the TMC quality, and how this is integrated into the new units?

Please can someone clarify. Does the 720 have built in rds-tmc capability. it mentions on the US site 'RDS-TMC traffic compatible'. Does this mean built in or compatible with a future addon?

Just one question regarding the maps, I noticed they are Western Europe, will these be an improvement on the current WE maps and will they have the same amount of countries as the WE&CE maps (silly question?). Also, will the detail of the maps be as poor as the last update with finer details missing, ie, water, some minor roads etc?

Thanks.

As I understand it the 720 does not have a built in TMC receiver - it has to be bought separately. However it will have the 'TomTom Traffic' functionality via bluetooth and compatible mobile telephone with gprs data. TomTom seem to see the gprs solution as the way ahead for Traffic management.

Darren, have you tried adding your own custom arrow (replacing the standard blue arrow)? I cant wait to have a little picture of my car on screen, or even a picture of my face! Laughing

One of the new features is the ability to select the state or country you want to see results for when inputting a new address. Do you have to do this each time you enter a new destination or can you set it once and each new destination will be for that state or country until you decide to change it?

Is using speech recognition to input destinations faster than typing it?

No. In the UK the only TMC option will be to subscribe to TRAFFIC and use a compatible Bluetooth connected mobile to poll for updates. On the Continent there will be a 720T that comes with a bundled TMC Antenna. The TMC antenna will still be an option for basic devices.

As stated above, the 720T will not be available in the UK, all it is anyway is a 720 with a bundled FM TMC antenna.
