I bought the Explorist 210 package that comes with the Mapsend Topo software for the US. Until now, all has been well...I just create detail maps for wherever I'm going to be, and upload them to the 210.
So we're headed to Alaska, and I thought it would be nice to put in a few of the places we're spending some time...Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka. But my USA map contains no detail for these areas. Apparently, the detail is in the Western Canada Mapsend software, which I can buy for (ONLY) another hundred bucks or so.
I guess this would be OK, but I bought the software for the USA; Alaska is one of the states in the USA (also Hawaii, BTW, which is not included either). So why didn't they include it in the USA Mapsend software?
Thinking they may have set up a web provision for downloading small area maps such as used on the 210, I went to their website and only found an offer to sell me the Canada software for big $$$. No small maps available for reasonable prices, or any price.
If anyone with the Western Canada topo map is willing to make the small area maps for one or more of these areas (say a 15x15 mile square area) and email them to me (the .imi file), I'd like to try putting it on the unit and see if it works. The Mapsend software asks for unit serial numbers, but I suspect if I skip the uploading software and just drop the .imi file in my images folder with the rest of the area maps, it will work.
I suppose I could argue with Magellan about not including the entire US on this expensive software (and I may do that), but since we're leaving in a few days, it would be a moot point by the time I got any decent response, if ever. Any other suggestions, other than buying the whole Canada Topo map, appreciated. |
