|
|
Bought a 2Gb SD card from 'Mymemory' web site, its advertised as 133x but seemed sluggish in my camera. The card itself gives no indication of speed, but there is a code on the back (SD-MO2G) a quick google shows this to be a Toshiba card with a max read/write speed of 7Mb/3mb/sec.
Condiderably slower than the touted 20 Mb/sec read speed on the advert.
Rang 'mymemory' spoke to a nice lady called Diane who assured me they were all tested for speed (as if!) but that I could return it for a refund.
It's difficult to test these cards other than in practical use, am I being paranoid? Or have I been duped?
Just noticed they are suddenly out of stock since my call! |

I wish there was some standard benchmark test we could use for this.
I've never even seen any definition of how the "xyz times speed" reference correlates with the MB/sec read or write speeds. What is "1x" speed?
I found THIS article on a photography website, which gives some tips on spotting fake cards, and it has comparative tests of several different card types, but it is written from "the other direction" i.e. how various different cameras perform with the same range of cards. |

This from wikipedia article
Speeds
There are different speed grades available which are measured with the same system as CD-ROMs, in multiples of 150 kB/s. Basic cards transfer data up to six times the data rate of the standard CD-ROM speed (900 kB/s, vs. 150 kB/s). High-speed cards are made with higher data transfer rates like 66x (10 MB/s), and high-end cards have speeds of 150x or higher. Some digital cameras require high-speed cards to record video smoothly or capture multiple still photographs in rapid succession. As of December 2005, most devices comply to the SD card specification 1.01, with maximum speed of 66x. Higher speeds of up to 133x are defined by specification 1.1. |

Thanks for that, so it's multiples of 150kB/sec
Anyone know of a little PC program where you just slot a card in and it will tell you it's "xyz times" speed?
I found something HERE but it looks like its only for the Pocket PC/Windows CE. |

Cor, wish I hadn't started this!
HD Tach looked just the thing, but that site didn't seem to have a download link.
Google sent me to http://www.tcdlabs.com but EVERY link there sends you to some search portal with Free Ringtones | Cheap Airfare | Job Listings etc.
Then I found http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/hdtach-27.html
which has a long article saying that there is a new version (v2.7) and its awful.
Never did find a download of the old version... |

Sorry it looked the business when I read it
I've found this site which has the latest version on it (3.0.4). If you get the registered version you get sequential write testing as well. The database of their tests for comparison all appear to be from 2004 though.
