|
|
Drowned out by all the fanfare surrounding the launch of TomTom's Go platform was the news that Navigator is to be released on three of the most popular smartphones later this year.
Scheduled for a Q3 release, TomTom Navigator will be available on MS Smartphone, Sony P900 and Symbian phones. Coupled with the Beta release of Mapopolis and the Wayfinder and Navigon Server Based solutions, 2004 would seem to be an interesting time for GPS Phone solutions.
Would you use a phone and GPS instead of a PDA or do you think they are unsuited to navigation? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I use a P900, and the screen would be large enough for a meaningful display from TT.
It will probably mean swapping the memory card though for a specific one containing the map [UK] data.
But if it is linked to traffic master too, then it should be a good solution.
I don't know what would happen if you got a phone call though |

Assuming it was in a car-kit or connected to a BT Headset then you could take the call without any interruption aside from the incoming call appearing on the display until you answered it _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hmmm... talking on the phone, looking at the display for the next junction, listening for the next turn (from the phone speaker or from the radio speakers?) watching and listening for the next traffic update......BANG! 8O |

The screen certainly is large enough but the audio is marginal when driving at motorway speeds (at least with Wayfinder).
Unless things have changed then you can only have one bluetooth connection active at a time so with BT GPS you would have to either hold the phone or have it connected to a wired handsfree set. The incoming call will take priority over the GPS application. We found this out in Hannover as I was showing Darren Wayfinder when I had an incoming call.
If TomTom implement the Symbian version of the software the same as they are doing for the other new systems it will just be a plug and go install. Each map will be on a seperate memory card. _________________ Mike Barrett |

You can have more than 1 bluetooth connection at a time.
I don't see the problem, you could have dual audio feed overlapping each other. When your on a call and you get a voice prompt to turn left you will hear it, even if you have to ask the caller to repeat what they said, you'll still make the turn. I don't think the system will be intended to be run over the phone's loudspeaker. The ideal solution would be to have a properly fitted bluetooth car kit with audio over the car's audio system. |

I already run Traffic-i and Psiloc on my Nokia 6600 while driving, so I guess there may be insufficient memory left to run TTN also.
The TTN audio will be no problem as I use a Bluetooth headset.
I do think that PPC solution is still the best and safest for driving due to the touch screen and larger screen size, but the phone TTN version will be a good mobile backup solution |

How comes that this news is not on the official site off TomTom itself?! Can I really believe this story or not? We all know that many people wanted that TT ported their software to the Symbian market.
I really hope to read somewhere very soon an official statement of TT about this.

We were at the TomTom Stand at CebIT and saw the demo units in the flesh so you can believe it, I guess they have been busy with the launch of Go! but you should see some news on the smartphone releases soonI would expect. _________________ Darren Griffin |

This is so great news! At last we can have a choice in gps navigation for the Symbian market. We all waited very long for having TT on this platform. I think many people are going to be happy with this and probably many people will learn that they don't always need a pda for doing this, just their smartphone will be enough.
I'm looking forward it.

And to get you more excited I have heard that the P900 version is in Beta test with UK users already (we are not amongst them ). _________________ Darren Griffin |

It really is true.
I have a picture to prove it.
I will try and find it later and post it to this thread.
I am not to sure about the series 60 TT Navigator. The demo they had running at CeBIT was the TT City Maps. _________________ Mike Barrett |

I suppose that that version also works on the P800?
