Is says on this site http://www.driving-abroad.info/driving-in-spain that it is illegal to use a GPS device in Spain. Is that right?
I quote:

Talk about a bloody nanny state!
Can't eat a sandwich, can't switch cassettes, can't tune the radio, can't smoke, can't listen to a GPS, can't scratch your a4se! What's your other hand for then?
Next they'll be saying manual gearboxes are illegal cos you've got to take one hand off the steering wheel to change gear.

This was discussed here a while ago, a few people have said that it's perfectly legal (subject to common sense about where you place it and when you use it).

I asked Spanish colleague and he says many there have sat navs and its not illegal to use them.
However, its similar to mobile phone use in cars here. If you get seen fiddling with it when driving the cops can get you. |

| I Have used one there for the last couple of years - was not aware of any problems and never got stopped. But... I set it up before moving off and do not fiddle with it so maybe that is ok. |

According to a press conference yesterday, the Spanish traffic authority is looking closely into a new law that will allow them to fine drivers for using a GPS while the vehicle is in motion - which implies that it is not currently illegal but will be if it goes through.
Apparently they're also trying to convince manufacturers to modify navigation software to prevent it from being used while the vehicle is in motion - presumably this means that the touch screen would be disabled, rather than the whole thing. |

| I used my sat nav on Tuesday to drive back to the airport without any problem and while I was there I was using it on a dual carriageway where there was a police road block and I wasn't stopped for using my TomTom. |
