Well, the fewer moving parts a device has the fewer stuff can go kaputt. Before long we will see the Solid State disks with reasonable capacity go down in price so they can be used in devices like the GO. (At CES Samsung was showing off a 32 GB solid state disk, and Sony had the UX390P on display which actually uses it. This is not just faster than a hard disk, it also uses far less energy. _________________ Lutz

I second that - we are seeing quite a few GO700s with failed HD these days |

The car mount does not have a USB connecton point for the PC so you will have to use the Home dock for installation/ updates to POI files etc.
The unit uses a LIPO type battery, these do not suffer the same "memory" problems that gave trouble with NICAD cells, keeping it charged won't harm it - Mike |

Hi great review of the 910.
I have a question:
How is it to insert a bigger harddrive in the unit?
Will there be any problems with the hardware or software? |

you need a CF to ATA adapter (or was it ZIF?)
Anyhow, instead of a larger hard disk that consumes more power I would go for a CF card.
you will need to copy at least the ttsystem file onto the new drive before you install it. _________________ Lutz

I'm going to integrate it into the dashboard of my Saab 900 -94, so i don't need the battery.
My biggest problem with that is: how can I update it while it is stuck in the dash?
I need the possibility to connect my laptop while the gps is still in the car. and there is no us connection on the windshield mount. |

But there isn't any connection for the minijack and microphone. I'm going to integrate the gps into the dashboard, so I wont be able to switch cradle when it's mounted... |

I see. You will have to combine the mounts then, add the four wires for USB to the windshield mount. A multimeter will tell you which contact goes where. _________________ Lutz

Is it that easy thougt there would be more than 4 vires to do that.
Guess I will be buying a 1.8" 60 GB HD and put in to.
I will have to buy a CF to ATA adapter to then.
Have you changed harddrive in a tt910, or heard anyone else done it with succes? |

Very interesting article, thank you. I didn't notice any mention of which type of hard drive is inside the TomTom.
I was hoping to find some kind of manufacturer's software to enable me to reformat my TomTom hard drive because I have a TomTom One, and it has stopped being able to boot.
I tried to reformat the hard drive with the command "sudo mkdosfs /dev/sg2", but I got the error "mkdosfs: seek to start of device failed whilst writing tables".
Can anyone advise which type of hard disk is in the TomTom One? If it's an SD card, then perhaps I could just replace it. |

It's a sd card, not a hard drive in that model.
Using Windows' format (32) will do the job, if desired. don't use quickformat.
But have you made a backup? Formatting without one will cause a loss of all data, including maps. _________________ David |

IIRC all the TT One range used an SD Card.
They can be formatted with Windows OS. Alternatively there is a dedicated SD Formatting tool at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html _________________ Richard

TomTom One Third Edition used solid state flash memory ONLY with no SD card slot, there also a version of the One XL that again only used solid state memory with no card slot, if the internal flash memory is on the way out or has died then the unit is worth using as a door stop but little else - Mike |
