I'm assuming that the hardware within the x10 series Go units will support the new 7.x GPS software found in the new x20 Go units, so any one any idea just when this might be available as a (free? ) update for a 510? _________________ TomTom 720

So it may be a free update at some point but only in conjunction with buying new maps that can work with Map Share.

I disagree, I'm afraid.
Up to now ALL maps, however old, have worked with newer versions of software.
The reverse, is not true however... i.e a new map may need a new version of software. This was the case with v6 maps needing v6 software.
Obviously, if there is a feature built into new software (such as the road speed limit display) but an old map doesn't have that info, the feature won't work. |

Going back to the original question:

From the yourNAV News item on Mapshare
Quote: |
At first, only the new GO 520 and GO 720 (shipped with NavCore 7) will be suitable for use with Map Share, but by the end of the third quarter of this year, a software update should also make Map Share available to users of ‘older’ GO, ONE (XL) and RIDER units. |
I would take the "Q3" with a pinch of salt going by TomTom's previous record, but it certainly looks like before Xmas. |

I too expect the v6 maps to work in some fashion with v7 software, but I doubt the features which will distinguish v7 from v6 software will be available until the maps are upgaded. In short, I foresee no benefit in upgrading with older maps.

That would certainly be a reasonable assumption. _________________ Tim |

couldn't the Mapshare data be simply stored in an addendum file which newer software will scan? |
