So Mitac have decided to start charging for camera updates, at 34 euros a year after the first year's free subscription.
It makes the PGPSW database look even better value!

How so? With the exception of Germany and Austria, admittedly big exceptions, doesn't the Mitac database cover all mapped countries?
The PGPSW database, whilst better for UK mapping, is restricted to the UK isn't it? |

At today's exchange rate, 34 Euros equates to about 22 pounds - roughly the equivalent to a year's subscription to PGPSW.
However, the Mio speed camera database is limited to updates by Mio users, whereas the PGPSW database is updated by users of a host of different GPS manufacturers' systems and sites are verified, unlike Mio which just adds all 'new cameras'.
The biggest problem with either database is that mobile cameras cannot be allocated a speed limit due to a restriction of the MioMap software (unless there's been an update that I 've missed which has fixed this).
Other systems, such as Snooper and Road Angel charge about 5pounds a month for their updates - so Mio and PGPSW databases are still relatively cheap. _________________ Andy

I think that I will investigate patch_ui about speed limits for mobiles. I'm sure (without checking) that the MIO deliberately does not display speeds for mobiles, but am not certain what happens if the display limitation is taken off. If that does not work, I'll see if I can add the local speed limit to the Mobile cam display.

Trevor,
I'm afraid you can't 'reveal' the speed of the mobile camera because it isn't included in the MTC file, and if it was the present version of MioMap is not capable of reading it.
If you are going to work on this I would suggest your second line might be more profitable - with the caveat that the maps are often out of date with regard to speed limits.
Good luck!

Sal,
Thanks for your reply and your PM on the same subject.
I have found a file definition for the spud??? file for the 310. I don't suppose you know off the top of your head whether this is the same as the .mtc file format (or indeed identical) They have an excel spreadsheet and do the manipulation in VBA so I'll be OK there then.
I suppose it's a bit dubious as to whether to alert at the local (possibly wrong) speed limit or just to leave things as they are. But as I'm always up for a challenge, I'm going to have a go anyway and then decide whether to use it or not.

Trevor,
I understand that the spud format is only for the US versions. If so, then it is not compatible with the European MTC files.

Sal.
Of course, you're right. I loaded a .mtc file into the spreadsheet and came up with a load of gobbledegook. Oh Well!!!!
