|
|
Hello!
I'm new to the board and to GPS.
Can anyone advise me as to how I can get GPRS for traffic information for my tomtom in Europe.
TIA!
bob
PS Orange say that thier bundles are not designed for use outside the UK. |

Welcome to the forum, your existing setup will probably work in Europe BUT using it could cost a fortune, data traffic is costly when roaming even with bolt ons or inclusive tariff, I suggest you ask Orange what their charges are prior to using the service - Mike |

Thanks Mike!
Am I right in thinking that, in the absence of managing to buy a data bundle, I would have to access GPRS on a time basis and pay the usual international rate every time I recieved a traffic update?

Not quite right, GPRS charges by the MB or part of, so the charge is related to actual amount of traffic in bytes sent and received, the time duration you are connected for has no bearing on the cost - Mike |

Thanks again Mike!
Can you point me to any sites that might help me to esimate costs (no. of traffic updates/MB, cost/MB), and European providers, etc?
Regards,

Sorry Mike.
Thought that you were a site moderaror! :-(
I'll do my own research on the above.
One thing, though; can anyone tell me, roughly, how many traffic upgates one could expect per MB?
Thanks!

Mike is a Moderator
TomTom have a table with approximate data usage patterns here.
Service Providers are remarkably cagey about the cost of GPRS Data when roaming, given that it can be £8/Mb on some UK plans you'll need to cost what 1Mb of data will cost you for a two week trip to give you an idea. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Many thanks Darren!
That's just what I was looking for.
Apologies, Mike!
The new boy got a bit confused here

Just one last (?) thing for now.
I want to log the data (GPRS) volumes on my mobile.
I can choose "Internal data Session, External D S, or Total Data Transferred".
Can you Darren (or anyone else) explain the first two?
TIA!

Keeping a tab on GPRS usage is handy if you are on a restricted allowance, depending upon the phone you might be able to use SPB GPRS Monitor which can log upload, download and related cost when set-up correctly, this only works on PDA based phones though AFAIK, I am not aware of other similar packages for other phones using different OS - Mike |

There is a GPRS Monitor for MS Smartphones as well. _________________ Darren Griffin |
