I was under the impression that the new devices were all installed with version 7 software, which is completely different as it allows you to alter maps if they are wrong. For this to take place, I am pretty sure it will need a completely new map format and therefore the old maps will not work. I may be wrong though.

No insider info at all, but it's never been like that before.
New maps may have needed new software, but new software has always been able to read old maps. Any new features (like the speed limit display (or Mapshare?)) obviously wouldn't work though. |

but if they're rolling out v7 software for older units then surely the mapshare etc must work with old maps? they can't force you to buy new maps to work with free software update, can they?! |

Is there any way you could find out for sure ? Do you have a Tom Tom contact who could confirm this ? Version 7 and mapshare on my 710 would be excellent and I'm sure we could all benefit. _________________ Tommo...

The brief from TomTom said that new app. and map would be required. At the moment, that's the line. _________________ Tim |

I've just emailed TomTom on this subject and they tell me that 'all maps purchased from TomTom will work on all TomTom units'. Maps may have to be copied, of course, if they are on an SD card and the target unit doesn't take SD cards! I wanted to know if my USA maps would work. |

Of course it's possible that the new software will work with the old maps, but not all the new functionality will be available.
We saw the same thing with the speed limit display (whether you like it or not). If you only downloaded the new software, but didn't buy any new maps, you did not get to see the speed limit and the awful flashing red display. However, when you downloaded the new maps to go with the new software, it was present in all its glory.
I would imagine that something similar will be done with the v7 software. You will be able to use it with the old maps, but MapShare won't be available until you get hold of the new updateable maps.
This is just a guess, with no insider information, but it seems the most logical scenario. |
