i totally appreciate what your saying and i'll probably be holding off for a Tomtom 720 but can I ask why did people use the standalone speed camera detectors that didn't have gps if they didn't provide any warning?
You get a warning from Gatsos!

As well as Petrol Stations, Pedestrian Crossings, Automatic Doors, ... Crying or Very sad

Sad That's it in a nutshell. Sad
Cameras have moved on a long way in the past few years, most cameras now do not give a tell-tale signature, when once they all did, so the detector isn't reliable anymore.
There use now is mainly for mobiles and hand held cameras only.

If you really want an "all-in-one" this unit - http://www.pogogps.com/ - the Pogo (from Origin) seems a neat little thing, but needs permanent wiring (unit removable)

It's the Pogo Drive, with Sat Nav, PogoDrive will warn of ALL fixed speed cameras, including:
• Gatso cameras
• Watchman
• Specs average speed cameras
• Truvelo cameras
• Speed Curb
• DS2 Speedmaster
• Plus accident blackspots

And the way it does it looks excellent from the online demos I've seen (if you do a search, some retailers have video of it working)

Would buy one, but the permanent fix put me off

Also if you read the PogoDrive posts the Sat Nav isn't a lot of good!

We haven't heard anything from 'westewoo' or 'BBQKing' on the updates from Pogo of late have we? westewoo was acting as a guinea-pig for Pogo last time I heard. I had a Pogo Drive but returned it due to the problems I was having with navigational side of things more so than the camera database, the visual and audible alerts were very good. However I decided against buying the 'Alert' as 'Origin' seem set against incorporating mobile camera's into their database which just does'nt make sense to me and its a feature I want..

I had a radar detector for a while which actually seemed to notify you more that you were approaching 'Tesco's' and the likes rather than gatso's or mobiles. Don't waste your money, the only thing you will know in advance is your speeding ticket will be arriving shortly!

I haven't yet bought a 'Talex' but they seem to me to be the next best thing to the old 'Drive-Smart', as stand-alone unit go, i.e. a good alround database that incorporates mobile cameras and allows the driver to input their own user definable sites. At £80. or less there doesn't seem much else to compare on price or performance. Trouble is with all these things you have to buy to try. Having bought the Pogo Drive and returned it, and having bought the 'MicroGo' which is in my view, RUBBISH, gave that to the wife, I'm no to keen to rush out and buy another pup!

So anyone with a Talex, whats it like? or whats better?

As GJF suggests, read the posts on the "Drive".

does the pocketgpsworld include speed curb cameras? Recently discovered it as an alert on the snooper units. They seem as good or similar enough to the pogo ones.

The radar jammers are generally illegal except for the one that double as a garage door opener.

If you want the ultimate detector/jammer, get a Benz with the Advanced radar distronic - bleeps at us for every single speed detector pointing at our front. Distrupts reading of first one then you just slow down as they take a reading of your rear Laughing Out Loud.

Nothing for thieves to steal and quite good for advanced warning.

But yeah, the detector/jammers are only good for one block.

Personally I don't use this stuff, i just rely on my knowledge of the road and eyesight. It is useful though only if you think the road is 50 and it turns out to be 40 because some toughie pulled down or sprayed over the speed signs Sad
