The two companies have partnered for a long time - TA's Map Insight is a very cool tool and I'd expect Map Share to be the same. A way for the two systems to benefit mutually might make sense, but I guess it is too early to tell. |

I'm sure TomTom is well aware that no matter how refined they make the software that runs their devices, customers judge their product in large part by the quality of the maps. While Map Share should help improve this perception for those who regularly update via TomTom Home, it would appear that the majority of TomTom users buy it and never update the content via Home. I'm just basing that on the release where TomTom recently announced the one millionth Home user even though they sell that many GPS units in just one quarter.
To me, this implies that a significant percentage of TomTom's customers won't be taking advantage of Map Share. I suspect Map Share will boost the overall percentage that use Home but I'm sure there will still be lots of people that won't. The Teleatlas maps that ship on TomTom's products or the maps that can be bought as updates need to be as up to date and accurate as possible. Hopefully Map Share can supplement Teleatlas' mapinsight error reporting and help them get much needed fixes in to their maps sooner than they are currently able to.

I have a sneaking feeling that MapShare is not going to do the business. I have come to the conclusion that TeleAtlas's license to Tom Tom might possibly have been negotiated to allow some user messing about. But noticeable changes to TA's copyrighted maps? I hardly think so.
The TT maps are known to be from TeleAtlas and they'll not take kindly to all us hoy polloy making our own mess of them and passing the information to be put onto other hoy polloy's TT devices - who'd answer for errors? TT or TA? - They'd argue from here to breakfast time that it was the other's error! Furthermore, Tom Tom have never told me they have survey vans like TA's, so just how they propose to verify anything at all is a good question. If you opt to get all the unchecked "corrections", when I put one forward today, when will you download it - 10 seconds after I upload it? - tomorrow? - batch processing next month? - next quarter?
I'm talking myself more and more into the belief that the new gear is mostly vapourware - selection of cursors my **se!!

| OK, let's see now. The latest maps are worse then they used to be, not because of Teleatlas, but because TomTom are trying to cut down on the volume of the data. We have a traffic (TMC) receiver which doesn't work. We have an FM transmitter which doesn't quite do the job either. In my opinion the X10 range was crap because of its shape. The ONE v3 is a perfect device, but no, we must have a screen which is slowly getting as big as the actual windscreen. And now we are graced with V7. What are these things behind the menu icons? Tabbed browsing? Where did they get their latest GUI designer from? Garmin? He/She/It couldn't even get the colour right - the "Citycar Lilac" is actually light blue. So. No real improvements, a few gimmicks, less attractive UI. BUT. Time and time again they proved that they know what they are doing. |

Apparently Citycar Lilac was designed by a committee and came about as a result of it being very popular with the majority of TT's customers.
Not so much that they know what they are doing - they've achieved escape velocity momentum through market share (off the back of the earlier innovative models) and will survive for quite a long time yet. But I reckon it'll catch up with them eventually if they don't start paying more attention to users.

Of course, AND a Deep Ford warning (Navigate means you can float over them). Popular amongst the majority of TT users.

clever move by TT and of course they can validate large number of errors via google earth etc.
By getting the user base on board they are really turning the screw on data providers to provide the goods in a timely fashion.
