As a matter of interest, is there a performance hit using 3D over 2D? My unit is a GO910. |

I must confess that I prefer the 3D display for all sorts of reasons, but the main one is that, to me, it relates to what's going on out there. The only problem I sometimes find is that the display is very slow to update when going round roundabouts for example - doesn't always happen...... |

I prefer 3D since it gives me a more intuitive representation of the road. Also, in the 2D mode the current location is in the middle of the screen so I have stuff that's behind me on the map that I don't really care to see.
I have occasionally switched to 2D when in major urban areas where the sheer density of roads makes it easier to see in 2D. |

Guys, the 3D you are talking about is not 3D at all, you are just looking at the same flat (2D) map at an angle and it should be called 2.5D or pseudo 3D. |

How true.
Although I do like it as it seems to fit with how I used to visualize routes before satnav. |

I never look at my mapbook straight on, but slightly at an angle. Does that make it a map and a half, or pseudo map?

So we have 'perspective 3D'?

Anyone been on the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, located in Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal's Studio's Island of Adventure, in Orlando Florida.
Now that's what you call 3D, can't wait for the day when that comes on my Sat Nav HUD combination. _________________ TomTom Go 60

While the effect is really cool, I'm not sure if Doctor Octopus clinging to the front of your car and shooting flames at you would really be a popular "feature" among users :-)
What a great ride. The 3rd or 4th time I went on it, I tried to completely ignore the visuals and instead look around to see how the illusions are created.
I think the nose-dive straight down from the top of the building is among the simplest and most astoundingly convincing bits. |

Thinking..... how the map writers could make that work, coming off the QE2 bridge at Dartford Kent. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Driving to London again recently, a few weeks after my first trip and not long after I read this topic, I made a point of using the 2D view once I was off the motorway and into the 'urban sprawl'. I think this is how I'll use my device in the future. When you've got multiple entries and exits from roundabouts and other more complex road systems, the 2D seems to be less laggy than the (pseudo) 3D view and in very busy traffic it seemed easier to see exactly when the next turning is as you can see much more of what is ahead of you.

Tried 2D today. Garmin i3 zooms out too far to make it usable for me. Now have to stare too long and hard at the screen to work out which turning it wanted me to do. Much easier in 3D. |
