TomTom have today announced two new Go devices: the 520 and 720.

These new super-slim devices are packed with a host of features including the new innovative Map-Share feature - a proprietary system allowing users to update their maps on a daily basis via HOME. The updates are provided via users around the country sending in reports via the units themselves.

Other features include voice recognition for addresses, built in FM transmitter and the ability to record your own voice prompts (or even have your kids directing you 8O )

Tim is in Cannes right now so expect a full report from him very soon!

Expect a report in greater detail tomorrow, but here are TomTom's Press Releases on the new products and a new map sharing (one we are willing to discuss!) facility. I think the latter is a major step forward, considering that TomTom receive around 15,000 map error reports from their userbase.

Ground breaking new technology allowing for daily map improvements and a host of new features, such as speech recognition, have been combined into one compact and stylish design, providing drivers with the ultimate driving experience.

“The new TomTom GO range sets the standard in smart car navigation,” says Harold Goddijn, TomTom’s chief executive officer. “With this introduction, we are making unique new features and technologies available to our users by delivering the highest performing, most cutting-edge satellite navigation solutions available on the market today. Our unique TomTom Map Share™ technology uses the power of our large installed user base for the benefit of all our users.”

Sleek Design
The new TomTom GO range features a new elegant slim design with high quality finish, making it fit perfectly in any car or shirt pocket. The large 4.3 inch touch screen has TomTom’s renowned easy-to-use and intuitive user interface with 3D graphics including building footprints that ensures drivers have an even better overview of their surroundings.

Unique TomTom Map Share™ Technology
The TomTom GO range also sees the introduction of TomTom’s unique new map improvement technology, TomTom Map Share™. This technology enables drivers to easily and instantly improve their own maps. It also lets users share improvements and benefit from all other users’ improvements, daily, automatically and easily via TomTom HOME – TomTom’s free software application. TomTom has the world’s largest satellite navigation community with over 10 million users. TomTom Map Share™ users can contribute and exchange all their improvements amongst each other, making the best maps available for all of them. TomTom Map Share™ means TomTom drivers can always have the most up-to-date maps and inside local knowledge at their fingertips (see separate press release for more information on TomTom Map Share™).

Best Speech Recognition (*)
Other new and updated features include speech recognition, meaning users have an extra option to select the address they want to drive to. Users can choose to select the speech recognition button and then simply speak out the city and street name they would like to travel to.

Enhanced Hands-free Kit
The enhanced hands-free kit features a new high quality sound system offering users the best hands-free calling experience via Bluetooth®. With optimised acoustic design, enhanced noise reduction, echo cancellation and an automatic answer function, the TomTom GO 720 and TomTom GO 520 ensure drivers can make and receive calls easier than ever whilst keeping their eyes focussed on the road.

New Safety Features
Safety is a key priority in the development of all TomTom products. The new TomTom GO comes with uniquely designed safety features so drivers always have direct access to extensive safety and roadside assistance information wherever they go. The extensive ‘Help Me!’ menu includes information such as the way to the nearest hospital, car maintenance information and first aid instructions. Another new safety feature is the short-cut menu, which enables drivers to jump straight to their favourite, most accessed information with just one touch on the screen for even easier and safer navigation (see separate press release for more information on the extensive safety features).

Traffic Ready (**)
The new TomTom GO range offers the latest and most up-to-date traffic information through its compatibility with RDS-TMC Traffic and TomTom’s Traffic subscription, making drivers’ journeys more efficient and stress-free. The enhanced traffic information user interface provides drivers with the most accurate route calculation by taking into account the current traffic information on the road and giving precise information about traffic incidents.

Audio Options & Built-in FM Transmitter
The new TomTom GO range comes with extensive audio options for flawless integration with the car stereo and user’s phone. Drivers can play their favourite songs through the integrated MP3 player or by connecting their iPod to the TomTom GO. In addition, music and navigation instructions can be played seamlessly through the car stereo via the built-in FM Transmitter.

Smart and Fun Extras
With the new TomTom GO, drivers can choose from a host of smart extras, making sure the destination is reached in a relaxed and enjoyable way. A number of personalisation options, such as recording your own driving instructions, have been added for the first time so users can easily record their own voice, or be guided to their destination by the voices of their children, family or friends. Drivers can also
view documents and pictures and exchange positions, destinations and other content with other TomTom GO users, through Bluetooth® wireless technology.
To compliment the new GO range, TomTom will bring to market a full range of accessories which have been designed specifically to match the design and finish of the new GO range. The range includes a leather carry case, a soft touch carry case, a remote control and a home charger.

TomTom HOME and TomTom PLUS
As with all TomTom products, the new TomTom GO range comes with TomTom HOME. TomTom’s free software application for PC/MAC, TomTom HOME is the essential tool to keep the TomTom up to date at all times. Through TomTom HOME customers can easily download new software versions and download the latest maps. TomTom’s large satellite navigation community can contribute and exchange all their map changes amongst each other through TomTom HOME, making the best maps available to everyone. In addition, the new TomTom GO range comes pre-installed with the latest safety camera database and a host of other TomTom PLUS services, including TomTom Weather and TomTom QuickGPSfix (for extra fast connection between the TomTom and GPS satellites). ~ All TomTom Map Share™ users can improve maps and benefit from improvements made by other TomTom Map Share™ users so that they always have the most up-to-date maps available in the industry~

Cannes, France, 5 June 2007 – TomTom, the world’s largest navigation solutions provider, today announced the introduction of TomTom Map Share™ on the new TomTom GO 520* and TomTom GO 720. This unique new map improvement technology allows TomTom users to easily improve their maps as soon as they spot changes in the roads with a few touches on the screen of their device. Via TomTom HOME, TomTom Map Share™ users also receive all map improvements made by others, making their maps as dynamic as the world they live in.

TomTom Map Share™ is a proprietary map improvement technology unique to TomTom, which enables users to easily and instantly improve maps. TomTom users can respond in real time to changes in the road network and correct the maps on their TomTom devices accordingly. Thanks to the smart user interface, it is easy to make improvements, such as to mark blocked or unblocked streets, reverse one way traffic or insert new street names, which will instantly take effect.

Roads are continually changing. This feature gives TomTom users the option to capture these changes on their device in-between map releases and keep their data as current as they wish. These changes allow the community of TomTom Map Share™ users to always have the most up-to-date maps and inside local knowledge at their fingertips.

TomTom has the world’s largest satellite navigation community with over 10 million users. TomTom Map Share™ users can share their improvements with each other easily through TomTom HOME, TomTom’s free software application that enables users to manage, download, store and transfer content from their computer (PC/MAC) onto their TomTom device. When it comes to sharing improvements, users can choose between downloading all reported map improvements or only accepting map improvements verified by a TomTom team of experts to guarantee timeliness and validity.

TomTom Map Share™ is offered for free with both the TomTom GO 520 and TomTom GO 720.

“TomTom Map Share™ is an important component of a new era in navigation. By enabling millions of TomTom users around the world to automatically share and mutually benefit from each other's local road knowledge every day for free, TomTom ensures that drivers have the most accurate and up to date maps available in the industry”, said Harold Goddijn, chief executive officer at TomTom.

TomTom Map Share™ will be useless for a long time if they don't enable this functionality on all the other older GO devices aswell. Any idea if they plan to add it on older devices, or are they just wanting to bleed us dry again.

Zark, I'm trying to get a confirmation of prices.

andydigital44, I'm not sure why you think it would be useless for a long time without being enabled on older devices, but anyway TomTom have said that their existing userbase will be catered for, although they would need a software and map update to their devices.

I know they are saying Q3 2007, but which month will it realistically be released?

Not sure in practice how useful the map share is going to be. The options you can report are:

Block/Unblock a street in one or more directions
Reverse a direction
Name or rename a street
Add a POI
Remove of rename a POI
Add or change a POI number

There is a report other error, but will these be available via the download? i.e. where there was once a roundabout but now isn't. I guess that sort of stuff will only make it onto the regular official map updates as it would be far too complicated otherwise. I've not been in a situation personally where I'd use one of the available options. Surely everyone uses the POI's from this site, and not the TomTom ones! Laughing

I've been in situations whereby I'd have liked to have blocked streets, renamed them, correctly positioned POIs and reversed traffic flow. The 'report other error' means that you can report missing streets, etc.. This will then be collated and, if necessary, verified by TomTom (not TeleAtlas) to make theirs the most accurated maps available.

Quite simply the number of people with the new devices would be tiny compared to the number of people who have the older devices without this new technology. So that small user base would have taken a long time to build up a useful database of corrections etc. If you are saying that map share is coming to all existing Go devices then that situation would be different. Sounds like we may to have to pay for the privilege though.

That is what TomTom are saying. They didn't commit to when it would be rolled out for use by the existing userbase, although there is always a gap between software and maps for new units and the same enhancements for existing ones.

Ok its fair enough i suppose. Also on the question of release date of the new devices, on one of the pictures in that presentation shown in the above link it says "end of July 2007"

Shipping in July was certainly mentioned at the launch, though I don't recall (and didn't note) anything more specific than that.
