|

On my Garmin C310 I currently only have UK & Ireland loaded, I'm going to load the rest of Europe as I'm lending it to a mate, can I just add these maps or will I need to reload the uk as well?
Thanks. |

When you load maps it overwrites those already on the unit, so if you want to keep the currently installed maps you will have to include them when you load new ones. _________________ Anita

The additional maps will load into a separate file, so won't touch, modify, or affect your built in mapping, and you will not need to copy it again.
However, depending on how much of Europe you try to add, you may run out of space, unless you are loading these additional maps onto a large SD card. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

I'm sorry if the information I gave was wrong.
I was just repeating the instruction I had from Garmin for installing mapping:
"Please note: Each time you send new mapping onto the unit it will overwrite anything that was there before. For example if you had France on the SD-Card and then sent Germany, the German mapping will overwrite the French mapping. If you wanted both countries on the unit,
then you will need to reselect all the mapping and send it across together.)" _________________ Anita

You are correct in that if you send France to the SD card, and then send Belgium as a separate transfer, it will overwrite France, but neither of these transfers will overwrite the UK & Ireland already stored on the device. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

OK, swing. I'm sorry, I thought it would. Garmin's "Each time you send new mapping onto the unit it will overwrite anything that was there before" is rather ambiguous then. _________________ Anita

But all my mapping including uk and ireland is stored on the card on my streetpilot c310, so this makes Anita right does it not?
Cheers. |

Ah, but no...
The built in mapping will be stored in a file called gmapprom.img, whereas these additional maps are all stored in a file called gmapsupp.img - this is the file that gets overwritten with whatever is transferred, hence why you lose whatever has already been transferred.
As long as you have a gmapprom.img file (probably around 180Mb for UK & Ireland, depending on the exact version of the map) then you will keep this, irrespective of what you do with MapSource.
Of course, as with any other major "change" to the unit, I would recommend a full backup beforehand to allow you to recover from any mistakes (by you, or by the software). _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Ahhh, the i3 is obviously different from the rest of the Streetpilot series, as it only has the gmapsupp.img file.
As the v9 DVD and instructions are the same I assumed the maps were handled in the same way.
Sorry for confusing the issue. _________________ Anita

Ah, well now you've got my wondering too..
I thought the Streetpilot range worked the same as the Nuvi range for maps - but I could be wrong, and Anita might have been right all along!
Definitely a need to take backups first! _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |
