Both icons will be displayed, its just not consistant when it decides to switch from one icon to the other, as the speed zoned icons differ to the cnsolidated or single file types it is very easy to spot the icon switching on the screen. - Mike |

Wow. This site gets better. My sister has a TomTom Go and I was suprised it didn't have speed camera alerts. Well, needless to say it does now! A dead easy implementation using the info on http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-poi-alerts.php. Thank you again to all the people on this forum. I know I am off thread here (I am a real newbie though). I noticed she is on version 4.42. Can she upgrade to 5 for free or is that a new device/chargeable service. I tried using TomTom Home but all that does is make my CPU usage go up to 99% and render my PC unuseable! |

She can update to v6 (not 5).
To update to the very latest version you or she needs to get Home working, but she can update to v6.52 very simply using the files from HERE
Just download the file, unzip it (right click on it and select "extract all" in WinXP) and there are very simple instructions in a text file.
But first, make sure she has a FULL backup made with Windows Explorer, (details HERE). This is ESSENTIAL, in case something goes wrong and you need to recover the maps. |

The software is a free upgrade. She presumably has the older Maps if she has 4.42 Software!
Before any changes are made, make sure she has a Full Backup.
You can download V6.150 from http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/oldboy/TomTomUpdates/ttgoupg615.zip
She might still have the original SD Card which is only 128MB. You might need to delete an unused Navigation Voice, because the Software size got bigger with each upgrade. V6.15 is about 3.5MB bigger that V4.42. ;)
You would do well to have 4 or 5MB free on the Card.
The 5 Files in the Zip File are Copied to the Root of the SD Card to overwrite thoae that are there at the present.
Note that the Menus will be slightly different. _________________ Richard

Thanks Oldboy & Andy. That is great. I have done the backup and indeed need to delete some files. I can see some 1Kb .vif fils that seem to be language related given their name but I am not sure which are the larger voice files and can't see anything on the disc. The disc looks like this:
Do you know what the names of the foreign files are - as you mention the disc is absolutely full right now.
She mentioned postcode search being improved - I guess she has seen somone else' since she isn't a geek like me hanging around fora like this (no offence to other posters of course...) . I will install 6.52 and then great_britainpostal_all.zip which I found else where. Even with the old map files she will be much better off which can only be good news.

If you go into Change Preferences and find Change Voice (I think that's what it's called) you can select any voices and have the Option to delete them. You can then see which are the non-UK voices.;)
It's a better way to do it as you don't delete the wrong voices and the correct vif file disappears as well.
To work really well you should have at least 2MB of Free Memory on the SD Card to allow the Device to Plan Journeys. _________________ Richard

Thanks. That hasn't worked - I get the option to test or to select. I will tell her to get a new card and sort it for her once she does that. Thanks anyway. |

Very odd...
Main menu / Change preferences / Change Voice gives me three buttons at the bottom: Select, Delete and Test. |

Just double checked and it definitely isn't there on 4.42. Thanks for trying to help though. |

That worked a treat. Now up to latest version and with postcodes. Incidentally I now have a delete button for the voices so that must be a new feature. Only have one voice now though... |

No it isn't a problem but really there is nothing left - less than 500kb! I have ordered her a new 1Gb one (only £7 for a micro disc with the adaptor - how prices have come down...) and then I will be able to fit all those lovely voice alerts that announce the speed of the cameras - they are almost as important as the POI alerts themselves. |

I have a curiousity question - Why would you choose anything other than "only warn if on route"? Why would you want to be warned of something not on your route? |
Some mobile cameras are operated from bridges over the road you are actualy on. So you would want to be warned that you are in the vacinity of the camera even if its not actualy on the road you are traveling on.
Hope that answers your question. |

Ah, but (hopefully) all the "overbridge" camera positions are now entered into the database on the main carriageway, NEXT to the bridge.
That is certainly the current practice.
As for the original question, the POI system isn't just for cameras. Very often people WILL want to be warned of things that aren't actually on their route. Kids and public toilets springs to mind.... |
