My personal preference is for a 2-D display whilst driving. I suppose its a legacy from all the years of reading traditional road-maps.
I cannot get on at all with the 3-D display. It does not appear to convey anything of value to me that I cannot get from the 2-D version.
Does anyone have a view on what 3-D brings to the party over 2-D ??? _________________ Today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. |

I feel a sense of depth perception, but it's obviously down the personal preference. |

Well what i mean is it feels more natural to imagine the route in 3D than 2D to me. I get a better sense of distance to a turn in 3D than 2D. Not sure how else to put it.... |

I find 2D is better for seeing what's ahead (journey wise) |

2D for me, I know what the road looks like, just have to look out of the window to see it in 3D! I prefer to see further ahead on the 2D map than the 3D version gives you. I Guess in some cases, complex lanes etc, 3d may come in more useful. |

Sometimes a 2D map doesn't zoom out far enough to show whats ahead. And on my navman with tmc, that sudden flash of red in distance spells trouble, and an oppertunity to change my course.
I think at times in 3D mode you have upto a mile of visible road layout displayed ahead of you. Even if you're not suppost to be looking at it, it does look nice.

I have gone from a Navman iCN610 , which only had 2D , to a Navman F20 Europe , which does have the 3D.
No contest for me I'm afraid........3D all the way , for all of the reasons stated by earlier posts !
I have got no intentions of EVER using the 2D function. _________________ Keith

I use 3D all the time and I can't get on with 2D.
BUT, when in London and a little bit susceptible to losing signal and having the display turn somersaults and recalculate the route from somewhere that I'm not, I change ONE of my devices to 2D for a glance when traffic stalls, for a zoom out view of where I'm headed - previously one would turn upside down and round about and I wouldn't know where the heck I was supposed to turn next. With 2D view I zoom out frequently to get the overall impression of direction, whether it has violent twists and turns. I did it today, but as soon as traffic flow picked up, I switched back to 3D. Same as PaulB2005, it just feels so much more right. _________________ Dennis

My previous GPS was a PDA based one and therefore on a portrait screen, it seems odd to me now that most devices seem to be landscape so you get a good idea of whats left and right of you, but less opportinuty to see what's ahead. Any idea why landscape seems to be the preferred layout for tomtom etc? Is it because it works better for 3D? |

Apparently people see in landscape so that’s why a lot of the PNDs show in landscape. However I still prefer a portrait screen display. ;)
As far as the 2D/3D debate goes. Use what you like. ;)
I occasionally use 3D as I do like it, but the vast majority of the time I use 2D because it’s far more accurate at displaying the correct position of the cameras of the PocketGPSWorld camera database. I like to check each and every camera to verify that it’s in the correct position.
