I use the PGPSWorld speed camera database alongwith the .ogg files of spoken alerts and it works great with my UK map on my TT510.
We are holidaying in Italy this year and so I have bought the TT map for Italy and want speed cameras to go along with it. From what I can see, PGPS doesn't do a specific Italian camera database and so I thought I would use TomTom's own Safety Camera information.
Whenever I connect to TT Home on my PC and it logs in to the TT servers, lists all the updates available and this usually includes a list of various countries safety cameras. So, I ticked the Italian ones, downloaded and installed them to the Italian map, but... I can't see them.
As I understand it, TT Safety Cameras are not presented now as POIs. You need to activate them via TomTom Plus.
However, when I select TomTom PLUS services from the main menu, my 510 unit flashes a "This feature is not supported" message in the top RHS corner.
Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?
Just for information, if I select TomTom Traffic or TomTom Buddies from the same menu, I also get this message (although I have used Buddies in the recent past so not sure why this has changed) and I also get the same message if I select Edit TomTom PLUS account from the Preferences menu.
Hope this helps someone isolate my problem! _________________ TomTom 720

I've been searching through previous posts on this and a similar problem was mentioned in this thread...
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=50019&highlight=safety+camera
Andy_P2002 asked if there was a custom menu installed - as with POI Capture. It seemed in that case, it wasn't.....but I do have POICapture installed and did configure the .mnu file to get my menu structure just as I wanted it.
Is it something to do with this?
I hope the TT Safety Camera database is worth all this effort!!!!!!!! _________________ TomTom 720

I only asked that because the other guy wasn't seeing the right menu items. Having POICapture (or a lot of other third-party add-ons) involves having a custom menu installed, which MIGHT have missed off the icons he was after.
Afraid I don't think it will help in your case as the menu is there but the TT is throwing up a specific error message.
I've got no other ideas either I'm afraid. (other than look for alternative Spanish camera databases that are normal POI files!) |

Thanks for looking though Andy.
....although I don't think that a Spanish camera database would work in this case!! _________________ TomTom 720

Again, whilst browsing other posts with similar problems, I came across the idea that it might be something to do with my Bluetooth connection via my mobile.
I have just changed phones from a Nokia 6230 to an O2 Xda Orbit (great phone otherwise 8) ). The problem with the error messages began about that time.
I certainly got the error message when trying to use Buddies very soon after changing the phone, as it always worked OK with the Nokia.
Could it be that all the none of the TT Plus features will work if the phone is not fully supported? I can make handsfree calls though and the phone does upload all of my contacts to the TT.
I am going to try to pair the TT510 to another phone, delete mine from the paired list on the TT and see if that makes any difference.
Does anyone know if this could be the cause? _________________ TomTom 720

Have just fired off an email to TomTom support asking if they can provide an explanation for the error message and the inability to access TomTom Plus services.
But in the meantime, I've found the answer myself....but it's not what I want to hear!
I deleted my phone (O2 Xda Orbit) from the TT510's paired phone list, so that there were no paired phones showing. I then re-paired the phone to the TomTom 510.
It found the phone, checked features and confirmed hands-free calling and Phonebook capabilities.
Then a RED screen 8O came up stating that "This phone does not report wireless data connection (DUN) capabilities. TomTom PLUS services cannot be used with this phone"
TomTom website also confirms that only these two features are supported by the phone.
Anyone else using an O2 Xda Orbit? _________________ TomTom 720

The only service currently supported on the Artemis devices and derivatives (O2 Orbit is one such device) is the hands free connection it will not permitt a data conection which is needed to use GPRS based services such as the Buddies or Traffic - the only way to get it back is to use TomTom 6 on the phone itself then it will work, but that renders the 510 useless - I am in the same boat so to speak with a 910 and either of my Artemis type phones - Mike |

Thanks for the information, Mike.
Is it the Artemis/Xda phone at fault or TomToms firmware?
If the later, do you imagine a future release could remedy the situation?
I have tonight found that I can access TomTom PUS services via TomTom Home's virtual 510. However, even using that there is no camera option shown within TomTom Plus services. The six options shown are
Download a map
Download POIs
Check for updates
Download voice
Download map colours
TomTom weather
How can I acess the cameras referred to above?
I have seen other screen dumps that do show the camera option, so I know its possible! _________________ TomTom 720

When the Artemis was first released it wouldn't even connect for handsfree operation with the x10 devices, recent updates (which are supplied via TomTom Home) to the device sorted this issue - we can but hope another phone database update at some future point resolves the issue and permits a data connection.
As for the TT camera database I don't use it for a number of reasons, not least because you cannot configure the alerts for distance or use spoken alerts with their files - perhaps someone who has tried using it could comment? - Mike |

Thanks once again Mike.
I intend to remind TomTom of this problem and try to put pressure on them to provide compatability.
Some hope, I expect!!!
I only wanted the TT cameras as the PGPS database does not cover Italy to my knowledge, whereas TomTom Home keeps offering me Italian Safety cameras every time I connect!!! _________________ TomTom 720

And Spanish ones? Sorry for that little brainstorm!
Have you tried http://www.scdb.info/en/
They seem to have coverage of all of Europe, but not sure if they do individual countries or if it is all of Europe in one. |
