Garmin released ver 3.90 on May 2nd - sure it wasn't there yesterday

Changes made from version 3.80 to 3.90:
Updated Lithuanian text translations
Corrected issue that could cause the unit to shutdown during some searches for cities and streets
Corrected issue that could prevent proper startup when custom POI files contain a large number of bitmaps

Changes made from version 3.60 to 3.80:
Added support for Brazilian Portuguese, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Romanian, and Serbian pre-recorded voices. Download voices using WebUpdater.

i'll give it a shot... actually, seeing as it mentions the issue is with bmp's i might try loading say, 50 poi files without any bmp's to see if i can kill it!

Be interesting to see though - given you've got the RGN restore file for your unit, it might be interesting to try 500 categories with no BMPs (should be ok), 500 categories with BMPs (should crash), restore the unit, and then try the new firmware with both sets again (both should be ok)...

Definitely interested to hear the results...

Of course, there is not yet an equivalent 6x0 firmware update (or 300/350 for that matter).

i stupidly went and updated the firmware without first testing 500 without bmp's so can't report on that one...

however, firmware 3.90: loaded up 436 poi categories with bmp's and....

EVERYTHING BOOTS UP FINE!

Well, you could downgrade just to test it, but to be honest, it's nice to see the problem fixed. Given this website was one of the main causes of the problems (due to the amount of POIs available for download), it's nice to see Garmin listened and have fixed the problem.

not sure if it's just my imagineation but the nuvi 310 seems to respond to keystrokes a little quicker after updating from v3.6 to v3.9

they haven't sorted out the mapping lag though like they did with the latest i3 firmware...

Just for the record, i got a response from Garmin that has solved the problem - see below:

A master reset will resolve this. To master reset the unit please try the following;

with the device switched off, hold and press the top right hand corner of the touch screen, power the unit on in the usual way, as soon as the unit powers up, release the power button, but not the screen. The message 'Do you really want to erase all user data' will appear. Tap yes and then reset the device as prompted. wait for a gps fix before setting off on your journey.

This has happened due to no fault of yours. The unit has collected corrupt information from the satellites. This can happen occasionally if the signal is blocked by tall buildings etc. however this is not common.

Do i detect some irony in Garmin's statement then??!! Is this problem unique to Garmin, or do all Sat Navs suffer from it?

Guffnuts - in my case, it didn't erase any of my favourites or installed POIs.
