Google Maps inaccurate?

Could someone have a look at POI ID 121938? It's part of a cluster of 5 POI ID's for two petrol stations either side of a main A road in North East England. The icons are now about 500 metres north of where they are supposed to be but looking at how they are laid out in relation to each other, I'm guessing that they were once accurate. Has a new Google map caused the problem? I'm making an assumption they weren't placed via postcode. An easy problem to fix, I was just wondering what went wrong, if indeed anything.

It is quite possible that the locations were originally done using the Total's own data, and several other online sources of info. The positioning would have started with the Postcode and then have been adjusted by any other positional data that might be available.

In those days Google wasn't used. This is why we now use Change of Location submissions, because it is difficult to pinpoint precise locations without Local Knowledge.

Having said that 500m isn't too bad. At least it's on the right road.

Thanks for the reply Richard. I wasn't sure whether displaying the image was allowed hence just posting the link originally.

Yeah, I don't suppose anyone would miss either of those stations in reality, but I'll correct the POI data so that it exactly matches the entrances to each of them. I'll probably drive that way tomorrow and see exactly when the POI notification kicks in currently, just out of interest.

Google maps is a boon for getting the data just right.

I use it all the time now. Pity the satellite imagery doesn't cover the whole of the UK in the same detail.

Not the actual POI themselves, but the establishments where/when you can identify them and pinpoint the car park entrance, which is not very often at the front door. ;)

Have a look at Tyre which can open and display ov2 files in Google Earth, keep the POI local to your machine though - it can be handy from time to time checking things - Mike

...or as an alternative, POI Edit can convert your ov2 files to .kml format which Google Earth can read directly.
