Help

After connecting the tomtom (710) to my computer it always requires me to go through all of the preferences when I restart it after disconnecting.

My GO and 510 didn't do this so do I need to do a reset or is there something more serious wrong? (I'd rather ask this group before I try the reset but if no-one else has had this problem I'll try it and report back.)

Do you Click the My Device Icon, if using HOME, before removal?

Do you Click Safely Remove Hardware, if using Explorer, before removal?

Check the MapSettings.cfg File, in the Map Folder, to see if it is Read-Only.

I haven't been using either of these methods - so will do next time around. But I never did with the GO or 510 either so is this something new do you think?

It's always a wise precaution. I think the newer models are more prone to problems.

Can I ask if it should be read only - at the moment it is set to Archive. If it is set to be read only how would I set the preferences? The only other option is 'Hidden'.

If only the Archive Bit is Set, that is OK.

The Read-Only Option should be un-ticked.

Then TomTom may well be right - they say that there is probably a fault with the unit so - this one can join the 910 back at Maplins - then we start all over again.

Thanks for your help.

If you haven't been connecting to your computer using TT Home and not using Windows Explorer, do tell what have you been using?

I read it as meaning he didn't use those methods to dis-connect.

Yes - I have used both explorer on a machine without Home installed and Explorer and Home on another machine. It doesn't matter which way I do it the 710 requires all of it preferences to be set-up from scratch when I start it again after disconnecting it. BUT my trusty old TomTomGo has no such problem.

Also - when you try to operate the device through the computer that method also starts by going through the whole of the setting preferences steps. It seems that the preferences are remembered perfectly well until the unit is connected to a computer - and then again until it is disconnected.

Doh!! So do I now you've pointed it out. I should get a big sign on my computer saying something about mind before mouth. Embarassed (Although I did come across somebody yesterday using something else - Dxxxx Opus?).

Just remembered another one - is the "lock" tab on the SD card UNlocked?

Good thought but both the original and my 2gb version are unlocked - I can add POIs etc. without a problem - indeed, copied all of the files across with a problem

Did you try a Reset?

Try taking the Card out, to force a Boot Up.

Yep. Tried all that - its going back to MAPLINs on Tuesday. All packed up and ready to go.

What is interesting is that nobody else seems to reporting this as an issue which leads me to suppose that it is a hardware fault with this particular unit.
