Currently using TT2 on a Dell X5 with the data on a CF card (borrowed from my Digital Camera)
Need to buy a card to the X5 so can use either CF or SD?
Is one an advantage over the other?
CF is cheaper, but SD is smaller, fits in the X5 neater and leaves the CF slot for other uses?
any recommendations? |

CF is not just cheaper but also faster and generally more reliable. If you really need to get a SD then make sure it's not a SanDisk from China. Those have a very bad reputation. SD cards need to be taken care of permanently - make sure it is defragmented. _________________ Lutz

I have both SD and CF loaded in my 2210 but I choose to store my map data on the CF because it is faster and has never given me any problems.
Unless you have other plans for the CF slot i.e. WiFi etc then go for the largest storage card you can afford and let price dictate whether it is CF or SD. And as Lutz has said, where SD are concerned, avoid any Sandisk cards or any that are marked as having been manufactured in 'PRC' (Peoples Republic of China) or just 'China' as these appear to cause the majority of problems. _________________ Darren Griffin |

It may have a lower power drain but we're talking very small savings here, certainly not going to make more than a few minutes difference on a full charge!
Unless this is an important requirement I wouldn't let it drive your purchasing decision _________________ Darren Griffin |

On the X5 the SD slot is not SDIO so you can only use it for memory.
I use a 256Mb SD card (Lexar) which has the TT2 maps on it, and then a CF Pretec GPS receiver. This seems to work without problems with TT2 _________________ Nick |

I've got the TomTom UK map installed on both SD and CF cards.
Just wondered if there is an easy way to see which one the TomTom program is drawing the maps from / or to change default?

Remove one of the cards and see if TT throws up an error? _________________ Darren Griffin |

There is no real way, as it will take the maps from either.
CF is lower in the priority order when installing, so I would guess that.
I suppose you could time the TT start up with only one in and then with the other and the see what the time is with both installed. _________________ Nick |

There is an easy way to find that out. Get yourself a registry editor and check the registry. It will tell you the path to the map, and there you can see if it is the CF or SD card. _________________ Lutz

You could checkout the POIs or create a new POI type. The POIs are stored in the map folder so look to see which of the map folders holds the newly created type. |

hi all
Picking up on the Sandisk sd cards made in China
I have today sent my 256mb sd card back for a full refund
from great Digital deals.
It was a sandisk and I could not format it with my card reader and the reader would not recognise it.
It also played havoc with my PDA and camera
Alas I did not see the above posting until after
I had purchased the card .
I think the moral must be to read more forum postings.

Marshall,
Just got myself a 512Mb SD card, and had shortlisted myself to just Panasonic or Simpletech (because of all the issues with non-Japanese makes).
In the end got a Panasonic from EBay. The 256Mb Panasonics ones are much more prevelant and you can find good (non-Ebay) prices
Simpletech 256Mb is £70 from Clove
Panasonic is (allegedly £54 from valuemedia - but also says it is an Integral), and £54 on Ebay _________________ Nick |
