Does anyone know what exactly each file in a TomTom Map does.

There is a list of files that are all obviously necessary but what does each one provide - does anyone know?

cline.dat
cnode.dat
cname.dat
faces.dat
poi.dat (I know this one)
mapinfo.dat
tmccodes.dat
traffic.dat

Thanks for the update but the reason I ask is that I have just got an upgrade to the latest version of the Western Europe map v675.1409.

But some of the files are smaller in size than the ones on my previous version map v660.1256!

cline.dat - on the new version is larger
cnode.dat - on the new version is larger
cname.dat - on the new version is smaller by 16meg!
faces.dat - on the new version is smaller by 4 meg!
mapinfo.dat - on the new version is smaller by 13 meg!
tmccodes.dat - on the new version is larger
traffic.dat - on the new version is a tiny bit smaller!

I'm confused as I thought that new map versions meant more data not less!!! and I bet you can't mix and match files between versions?

Each vendor has to customise and compress the map data before release. In this case it seems that TomTom have chosen to remove some data such as woodlands, use tighter vector data to draw rivers and canals (meaning more straight lines and less fluid curves)as well as employ a tighter compression routine. All this has resulted in the size changes you see.

Much discussion of this in other posts, Steve.
It looks like the v6.75 Western Europe map has been squeezed to fit into 1GB so it will work on the new version of the ONE with 1GB internal memory.

The new Western and Central Europe map (also 6.75) is only a few pounds more and doesn't seem to have this issue.
I think you should be entitled to a refund or swap from TomTom.
They, of course, may have other ideas Evil or Very Mad .

Having now tried out the new version I have to say I'm even more puzzled. Some roads near where I live no longer appear!! One road is about two years old and the other road is about three years old but now v675.1409 Western Europe does not have them - they are missing... how can 660.1256 Western Europe have them and the new version not.... TomTom have a lot to answer.

My advice is save your money and do not upgrade to v675.1409 Western Europe.

I aggree with your conclusion but you are comparing Naveq and TeleAltas maps. I can show you roads in France that aren't on the V660.1256 but are on all the Teleatlas maps I've looked at.
