Just to report this hack to make your unit speak streetnames, not just "turn right" that's all over the net works very well.
You do need to make sure your firmware is no later than 5.40.
Mine was 5.50, but I successfully downgraded it without too much pain, and applied the fairly simple hack.
Worth doing if you want that feature, although the voice is a little bit mechanical of course.
I guess at some point I'll want to update the firmware again and then lose the feature, but for now it's all good stuff. |

So, you going to tell anyone what the "hack" is then? |

Hi,
You say you managed to downgrade the firmware to make the hack work, how did you manage this? I have tried downgrading to approx 10 different firmware versions (by downloading old versions and answering yes when the C510 says "the software you are using is older than the current version....") and I still cant get the hack to work. In my "Locale" settings screen when I press the "British English" language tab I do not get an option to select the "British English Emily" language. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam |

Did you follow all the instructions in the link? It doesn't look as simple as you make it sound. i.e. there is more to it than just downgrading the firmware.
The full instrcutions are at - http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/text2speech |

I have got it working now, I installed a really old firmware and then upgraded it back to version 5.40. I pressed the reset button on the front of the unit a couple of times and then re-installed the TTS voices, once I did this it suddenly worked. I followed the instructions (tried both methods) to the letter with no luck, I wonder if the latest firmware (Version 5.70) leaves behind something nasty that cant be removed by downgrading to an old version. Fluke? Possibly! At least it works now.
Many thanks to the geniuses who discovered this hack.
