Hi all,

I recently purchased Tomtom 6, and was happy to see on the tomtom webiste prior to my purchase that I get a free safety camera download if I puchase a tomtom product before the end of this April (this was on a banner on the homepage of their webiste)...

Anyway, following a week of emails back and forth to tomtom, last thursday I was told that following sending proof of purchase to tomtom by email I would be issued with a code to activate the download.

Once I had sent the requested items, I got a message saying that they cannot resolve my problem (which was due to a batch of dvds being sent out from the factory without the required files on them), and I need to wait of their techincal department to deal with it.

I have been phoning them and emailing for well over a week, and still have not got a satisfatcory response, they say give it some more time.

Has anyone else had this kind of experience? I will contact trading standards if I have not had a satisfactory response over the next few days as they are clearly in breach of the trades descriptions act, as the offer is not as described.

This is the second time over a couple of years when I have had dealings with tomtom technical support, and I really do not enjoy the experience...

Thanks

Paul

to be honest, from peoples experience with tomtom's database you'd be better off using ours. you can try it for a month for only £2 (once the month is up you get to keep that version of the database but obviously it will be out of date after a month or so) or £19 for a full year.

Thanks for the info. I have used yours in the past, but have found there to be many inaccuracies in the data (I have in fact reported a couple of cameras that did not exist just prior to your database becoming paid for, and several months later the cameras were still showing on the map).

I am not trying to criticise your service which is valuable to many people, I would just like to try the different options that there are, especially as I may subscribe to traffic. If I take cameras in addition to traffic, the subscription is only 10 euros more (about £7) per year.

Keep up the great work with this very informative site, the best GPS site in the UK in my opinion.

Thanks

Paul

Sorry to hear that and naturally we want it to be as accurate as possible.

Let us know how you get on with TomTom's. They have no mobile data, no user configurable distance and voice warnings, irregular updates and from feedback here and on other forums very poor data quality.

It would be useful to get your view though going from ours to theirs as most use tomTom and then come to us. As you say, if it's free you've nothing to lose by trying (except your licence!).

If you think PGPS World's database is out of date, wait until you try Tomtoms

I suspect that you were using the consolidated database, and if so you would have received the same alert for mobile cameras as you would have for fixed cameras. As mobiles cameras are only occasionally in their mapped position, you would have had the effect of seemingly false alerts.
You may wish to continue with your fight to get a free TomTom database, but I think you'll find it much less accurate than the PGPS one, and it could well prove to be more expensive if you get caught out!

Sorry I'm against you here.

I pay for the PGPS cameras, because, as has been said - tomtom is worse.

However, I too have posted reports to get mobile sites removed - there is one in Welham, North Notts, next to the railway bridge, which i reported months ago. This particular spot I've had confirmed as being removed by the chief superindentant, and the location has now been changed, and gated, so a camera simply cannot be located there.

Still PGPS leave it in.

I realise this is just one location, but even so... its concerning.

And you will understand that we have to weight and or score removal requests otherwise we would be removing them left right and centre. Many people tell us there was no camera there or it cannot be a mobile site at the same time as we receive reports from others saying they saw a camera at site X, Y or Z.

Rock and a hard place for us but once we get multiple unique removal reports we will remove it. It is a big issue for mobiles, much simpler for fixed sites as we can quickly physically verify.

If you can think of a better system I'd be delighted to hear Smile

I'm not saying there is, but surely, now there is a (fair) charge, you have the resources to ring up these "safety" camera police groups and have this info confirmed either way?

If only it was that easy! They won't tell us information like that full stop Confused They have no obligation to tell us and understandably they therefore don't.

...and any information they do give on the safety camera partnership sites is usually incredibly inaccurate or far too vague...

just looked at this for you...:

your initial removal request (8th march 06) was the only removal request we had had for this mobile site and it had not been backed-up / verified so the mobile site in.

then on 10th feb 07 we had a submission for that point saying the site had been in use the day before.

so, is it or isn't it a valid site? it's hard to tell, especially with conflicting reports like these two.

this is just one specific example, there are many other like it and more complex!!

IF ONLY!!! I have lost count of how many times I've seen this, yet I'm still waiting for someone to post some decent information. I'd love somebody to tell us ...
How many cameras on the TT database?
What types of cameras on the TT database?
How often do TT issue an updated database?
If you ask PGPSW the same questions, they'll tell you. I don't think you'd get a straight answer from TT.

AND, BY THE WAY, you'll also find that the TT Traffic feature is probably not really any better than listening to Radio Five! (You'll find that out AFTER you've paid for a year's subscription).

Hi,

The removal request I sent for you (a few miles from Louth, Lincolnshire) was showing as a fixed camera location, and was there for quite some time after the removal request.

I have never (intentionally) asked for the removal of a mobile site, as who knows when the police will be back!!!

Thanks for looking into this for me anyway...
