One point I do need to make guys. In the absence of any firm proof of wrongdoing on Smart-Tek's part can we please be careful to avoid libellous or defamatory comments against the company and/or it's Directors.
Clearly there is a problem and I understand how frustrated you all are but we have in the past had issues with such and don't want to be piggy in the middle between lawyers and forum members again! Any posts that we consider cross the line may be moderated to protect us from legal action.
In the meantime I will continue to try and elicit some further information from Neil as to what's happened/happening with Drive-Smart. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Understood Darren, and thanks for all the help and advice.
On the point of playing with the makeup of their database and making our own, would there be a copyright infringement here or are we quite safe? _________________ TomTom Go 60

I doubt that decoding the format they use could be seen as infringing any copyright unless of course they hold the copyright to the .hex format ![Smile](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi GJF,
So it would seem. I tried the DS forum also after reading they had come back on line. I too found I could not sign in. I also note that most of the posts that were critical of them seems to be missing. Says it all really. I need to spend a little more time catching up on the weeks events as there seems to be so much going on. Anyway good to be back in the loop again and to here from you.
Back to moaning later today. 8) |

Morning rushkins, the holiday was great despite the weather's attempts to keep us in doors. Thanks.
I haven't had time to go through all the posts and comments as yet. Briefly however, like you I am not technically minded enough to understand all the jargon talked about on this site tending instead to be a more practical person. However, I wonder if there is any great benefit to salvaging the DS database. I suppose if it is a simply way to prolong the current life of the DS unit so that those of us who own one will have some means of extending it use there is some merit to this, only the teckie's have have an idea of what is involved in time and effort here. But whilst I was an avid supporter of the DS, I did expect that it would continue to evolve, what with the "Heads-up" and the "Mercury", but history has already been written on this. Needless to say time has moved on and the DS now looks like a brick compared to today's offerings, so the offer to build these units would not appeal to me if I was a speculator. The only real thing going for it still is the "free database for life" issue. I think we all believed in this philosophy whilst the DS team were leading the way in this approach. But whether you pay for a database, or whether its free, its only ever as good and as lasting as the people behind it and even with Neil's leadership and one-time commitment when things started going wrong for the team, they started treated their customers and supporters just as badly and with just as much contempt as any of the major players they once condemned for such behaviour. Anyway if Pocketgps can create a working database for it this will paid for via subscription and will no longer be free anyway. Having now bought a Pogo Drive I'm not sure for how much longer I will keep using the DS. Its only advantage currently over the Pogo is its mobile camera database. The pocketgps database is a great supplementary backup to satnav users (not that I have personally witnessed it in use) so whilst I would buy something like the TT or Nuvi today and install this database, I would not now buy the DS in preference to these more modern units even if I have to pay a £50 a year subscription.
As I say, I have not yet read all the comments so may well have missed some vital reason for staying with the DS. As for their forum I am, like others locked out and wonder why they have put it back on line at all, though they have removed the critical posts, and til some better explanation is given and is verifiable from an independent source, I would not place any further trust in either the DS team or their now very restricted forum. |

Well our annual sub is a mere £19 and only £2 if you chose to subscribe monthly.
Whilst the offer of a free database for life makes great headlines it's simply unsustainable in the long term IMHO. The investment in time and processes is significant to ensure a good quality database with regular updates and proactive maintenance hence the fees. Drive-Smart had the income from unit sales to counter the income from a subscription but without continued new product this would never last. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Nuttynurse.
I have never considered the DS database to be accurate and if you remember they depended on the users for info and there was always owners complaining about cameras missing or removed - so having it free when it wasn't up todate was really not a lot of use (you only need to be "nicked" once to get three points).
I would much rather pay £20-00 to be covered, although i admit that FREE was one of the reasons for buying the DS, that was just because i was being tight - what is £20 for a whole year, not even enough for a night out at the pub.
Additionally, i don't know what the Pogo does, but i still feel i need a speed camera "detector" as well as the Nuvi, although the Nuvi will have the same pgpsw database (i will probably turn it off, no point with two) it will never give me the "specialist" cover with voices etc as the DS.
I personally will keep the DS going, until it breaks down, then....will i buy another one.....well thats a topic by itself.

Reading between the lines i feel that Drivesmart would like to be far away from their customers as possible, they are all ecentric nuts and probally very clever and like being techno freaks - how that fits in to running a Company with UK laws and Trading Standards, is your guess as well as mine.
The "forum" isn't much good for communication but it has a mass of usefull info and technical help, so i'm glad it is still there. _________________ TomTom Go 60

The audio files can be obtained from PocketGPSWorld (currently in the ogg format and then converted to wav using a sound edittor) - Mike |
