Anyone found some suitable software for voice input for TomTom??
I'm thinking of being able to press a button, then say something like
"Navigate To..."
Then say "City", and spell out letter by letter. "L...O...N...D...O...N"
etc. etc.
Then you'd only need " Up, Down and Enter"
The microsoft voice program for WM2003 seems to be too highly structured - it only allows certain phrases like " whens my next appointment".

It is nice to have dreams... I guess it will take another six months at least before we see something like this - and I'm not sure TomTom will be the first one to have a useful voice command. Others try harder already. _________________ Lutz

A real shame.
I'd have thought that if the technology exists to be able to say
" Call Lutz Bendlin at Home" and for the software to parse this for both name and retrieve the correct number from the contacts - it would be able to enter letters and numbers one at a time.
I wish I had the time, skills and inclination to code for Pocket PC.
I'd expect it to be an add-on to the OS, rather than an individual app.
A brief search on the www seems to indicate that voice commands on the PocketPC haven't moved on for years, despite significant increases in chip speed.
Dragon had a full dictation package out when PCs had 33Mhz chips and 8MB ram!!! |

Voice command has got to be top of my wish list now. Just think how useful it would be to be able to say "Record position", "Speed camera", "50 limit".
and :D "send to PocketGPS" |

Surely all we need is a VoiceXML browser that plugs into TT. I imagine the grammar would be quite small. _________________ Geraint

I thought it would be worth emailing TomTom so I sent
Customer 02/07/2004 01.35 PM
"Please would you consider adding voice control to TomTom Navigator. We all need to make safety a high priority when driving and voice control would certainly be a big benefit. "
Response 03/07/2004 10.00 PM
"Dear Mr Davies,
The software is designed to aid you with voice instructions about turning and plotting a route and guiding you. It can not replace you, the driver, as the ultimate decision maker for safety and speed.
We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,
The TomTom Customer Support Team "
and I followed it up, using MyTomTom on their website, with
Customer 04/07/2004 09.04 PM
"You do not appear to have understood my request. Adding voice control to TomTom Navigator would be, like a hands free mobile phone, a contributer to safety. Some features in TTN and other in-car navigation systems could encourage some drivers to interact with the navigation program. For example to record their current position whilst passing a safety camera. Using voice commands such as "Record position" would be less distracting and give the driver every assistance in his main task - driving safely.
Voice command must be something for you to consider, especially as Microsoft are demonstrating it on the PocketPC. "

Theoretically they should be able to use the MS voice API (last time I looked you could download that freely) to voice-enable commands for MS voice.
Or, if you had access to the TT SDK you might be able to write an add-on that does it, although I hear that the SDK is not very useful/powerful and may not expose TTN's user interface commands. |

The problem with the SDK is that it's not good for navigating to a specific city and street.
If I use the SDK to navigate to my road in Sutton, Surrey it decides that's it's going to select a different road in Sutton, Bedfordshire or something. It's not smart enough to search all the available Sutton's for the correct road, you can't specify a county and it won't return a list of choices to you to select from.
If it did that it would be far more usable...
There is a new SDK coming out, which I've been chasing them about for months. It was supposed to be end of May/beginning of June (but then it was also supposed to be February!). That may give some extra functionality. |
