Is it legal in France for a GPS to visible to the driver of the vehicle?
Also, is it illegal to have the locations of "speed cameras" stored on your GPS? You seem to be able to buy books with the locations of all the fixed unit "speed camera"
I know that Radar detectors are illegal but are the ones that detect lasers? |

Having detailed my answers at great lengh
I honestly believe that you should check with the official French authorities before attempting to use your device if you are not sure.
Although the advice given by members on this site is normally 100% accurate, you are risking a hell of a lot if they get it wrong, (huge on the spot fine, confiscation of your device and possibly your vehicle if you can't pay the fine)
I am going by my own experiences and I have been stopped with a gps device a couple of times and no action was carried out by the police, in fact they paid no attention to it at all. _________________ Tomtom Go730T

Quote: | Although the advice given by members on this site is normally 100% accurate, you are risking a hell of a lot if they get it wrong, (huge on the spot fine, confiscation of your device and possibly your vehicle if you can't pay the fine) | One of our English members who lives in Nice, assured us it is not illegal to have cameras on your device.
However, my French friend assures me it is illegal, the Sat Nav is OK as long as it doesn't obscure your vision but the Speed Cams are a 'no no'.
The original interpretation was something like:-
'It is forbidden to use any device which detects the position of speed cameras'.
My friend tells me this is incorrect, the interpretation should be 'It is forbidden to use any device which indicates the position of speed cameras'.
Detects or Indicates.
If the former they don't, so it's OK. If the latter they do, so it's not OK.
There is the argument that as the French Authorites allow maps with the cameras shown, it should be OK but a map isn't a device.
So as classy56 says Quote: | you are risking a hell of a lot if they get it wrong |

Coincidentally within the last couple of weeks the Telegraph motoring section carried a letter warning of the risks of using a Satnav loaded with speed camera locations in France. Apparently the French police are now clamping down and by using one apparently you're risking a hefty on the spot fine or even confiscation of vehicle.
From memory I think this issue has been discussed elsewhere on this forum (can't find it now) and there was some confusion or doubt whether this actually is the case. |
