Just run webupdater and it doesn't seem to be there, yet Garmin have e-mailed me a screenshot of webupdater which does show version 4 together with the version change history. |

Hi all,
I too tried the Webupdater to find the option wasn't there, I then as in previous posts deleted the 32k Bin File & the Updater showed the Download Option, I install it and then connected my Unit to the Traffic Unit in the car, but it just sat there.
I checked the SW Version and it still says V3.90.
Cheers

Ok I Got bored and tried this!
This is on a NUVI 310D
Seeing as this was a firmware upgrade from GTM3.9 to GTM4.0 I thought what the hell!
I take no responsibility for the following if it don't work !!!!
Moved the 32KBin file mentioned,
Then went through webupdater and downloaded the mysterious V4.0 GTM Upgrade.
The next bit you can only do if you backed up your NUVI F Drive when you got it! I backed mine up after I registered it!
I then made another back up copy of the Nuvi F Drive just in case.
I then deleted everything out of the Nuvi F Drive working on the assumption this is all software, maps and other rubbish that might come in handy one day - and not firmware!
I then copied my "backed up original NUVI F Drive files" back onto the NUVI F Drive.
After rebooting a few times as asked and accepting software upgrades as shown on screen my NUVI was back to how it was when I Registered it!
I then went through webupdater and downloaded any upgrade options for software. (The GTM 4.0 Upgrade was not there as a choice).
After rebooting again I checked the system/about and all seemed exactly the same as before, SW Version 3.5, Audio V2.20, GTM SW V 3.90, GPS SW Version 2.90.
I thought!
But put it all in the car and went for a drive to where I know I had recieved traffic before the V3.9 Upgrade and wallop! 5 Pages of Traffic Info! Never had that before "ever" since I have owned the NUVI. The interesting part was that when I turned round and went home! (I Live right in the sticks) the NUVI had locked onto all the traffic info and was still displaying it even when I was well away from where I had recieved a signal or data from the GTM.
When I got home I turned the unit off for a while (Still in the car), waited 5 miutes then turned it back on and I had Traffic Info again! Result........
Something has definately changed!
Now all I have to do is find out why its not showing V4.00 but still displays V3.90
Remember this could be Risky! |

Same here on a Nuvi 310.
You can only get the update by deleting the 32kb .bin file.
If you open the new .bin file created after the "supposed" v4.00 download, it only states v3.90 in the text. _________________ Nuvi 310 v3.90

Glad to hear someone else tried it actually in the car and driving!
So what shall we christen this upgrade then!
GTM V3.9 and a bit! or shall we just call the Forum "Garmin NUVI FAQ for the GTM"
I mean honestly how easy is it to write "V4.0"
They managed to write "V3.90"
I Wonder if they really do read these forums!
Anyway time will tell! |

The GUPDATE.GCD file in the Nuvi 310 update has the most enormous section of text traffic warnings inplain text, visible if you open the file in Word. There are even references to watching accident(s) on the other carriageway!
I found them by doing a find for "ver" looking for version numbers!
Looks future proof or perhaps there is more comprehensive traffic info in the States!
One of the bin files announces GTM version 3.90 in Notepad. |

I believe you actually fixed a different problem. There is a problem where the Nuvi stops receiving traffic alerts, and this can be fixed by performing a full reset of the unit. That's not the problem that appeared with the v3.90 GTM firmware - this version can lock onto the Classic FM signal, and instead of moving on (as it's no use) it stays locked onto it. If the traffic module already has a nice complete FM table with lots of Trafficmaster entries in it, it continues to work after the v3.90 upgrade, but a new unit, or one where the FM table is cleared, will potentially not work at all.
There is no way (as I understand it) to downgrade a traffic module's firmware version, except by some scarey methods, which I'm not willing to try on the offchance. The fact the v4 GTM firmware was not listed as an option implies this firmware was never downgraded, and you've not upgraded either. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Just phoned Garmin - they have no news and are still waiting for the USA people. He said keep checking webupdater and phone again if haven't had any luck by the end of the week. Great! |

What file(s) are downloaded in the upgrade for the GTM ?
I tried, last night, by deleting the 32k nnnnnn.bin file in the GARMIN directory (after taking a backup) - then ran WebUpdater. It told me there was a new download and when I downloaded it the progress bar went from 0-100% in a second or two - and I am only on 512Kbps here out in the sticks.
Another 32K file nnnnnn.bin had appeared (different name) but on comparison using WinHex it was bit-level identical to the original. 'Poking about' with WinHex, like inspiredon, I noticed a lot of traffic related text messages in GUPDATE.GCD - but I have no idea when this file was copied/installed - perhaps they are there for current/future use. But it wasn't during the download last night - that was much too quick. _________________ Phil |

The 32k .bin file is the GTM firmware, which is loaded into the GTM traffic module to control it. It sends information to the Nuvi, which interprets the codes, and hence needs to be able to display logical messages to the user, hence why the main unit firmware (gupdate.gcd) contains the strings to use.
I have to say, the RDS-TMC standards include all sorts of additional codes and information which I don't know any TMC data supplier uses, hence why you may see more messages than you ever see on the unit itself. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Just tried the update and it worked - it has updated my GTM firmware to 4.00.
I will test it tonight. |

Have you looked in the diagnostic screens to see what version is listed there? |
