Is it possible or is GPS too inaccurate for this application?

The speed is very accurate (0.1 MPH in good conditions) but there are a number of problems.

To do it with a consumer grade GPS is difficult, the obvious problem is that most units only output position information every second. Mathmatically, you could have an educated guess at where the 60 point was (ie, if you were doign 55 MPH one second and 65 the next then it probably was .5 seconds ago). I don't know what sort of accuracy you would get though.

The other more serious problem is that it's not always easy to accurately detect when the vehicle starts moving using a GPS unit. If you had some other hardware (ie accelerometers) then you might be able to cook something up to accurately detect your start time.

Also, the position/speed output by your GPS may lag behind reality by a second or two.

So, it's not as trivial as plugging a laptop into a GPS unit and logging the data for processing later. Confused

There was a commercial company that claimed to have a GPS based unit that could measure 0-60 times but I can't recall the name of them. I have also heard of "10Hz" GPS which output updates at 10 times per second which could do the trick, but I don't know who makes them or cost/availability.

Using the Garmin iQue forum, one of our forum members produced:-

Quote:
simulate the start of a drag race using the "Christmas Tree"
staging lights. It times a run at the ¼ mile and 1 kilometer distance. It also provides elapsed times of six different speed breaks, and will save the maximum speed reached before the Stop Button is pressed.

That's a good way to overcome the problem of detecting when the vehicle starts to move! It could be prone to inaccuracies if you "jumped" the start though.
