The lead from the cigarette lighter socket to my 910 is far too long.

How do I open the lighter plug so that I can cut the wire and re-connect it, please? I can see no screws visible. It is just clicked together and, if so, what it the chance of it going together again?

I would not try and shorten it if it's a major problem then fold it up and cable tye it

It's easily do-able but:

Thanks Andy.

That's exactly what I wanted to learn.

Glued. No wonder there are no screws visible.

I have a spare so it does not matter if it gets a bit scratched. The odd scratch will be far less ugly than a coil of unwanted cable, no matter how neatly restrained.

I'm thinking that it'll be simpler and neater to cut the cable and re-join it with a proper cable connector.

Eldar,

OK, I'll have another go at the glued device this evening when I have a few more tools at hand.

Can you remember where, on the device, you managed to create a gap that you could prise open?

Yes, I have a very vivid memory of that one :-) (We've repaired something close to two hundred of the first batch of the car charges which used to send 12V instead of 5V to the GOs).
We use a flat blade screwdriver and one of the two "windows" for the ground contacts (the cut-outs are on the *both* parts of the plastic body). The blade should be of approximately the same width as the cut-out. Insert the screwdriver under an angle (almost flat) but not too deep and then push it sideways. That will either separate the two parts or create a gap to insert a second screwdriver.

I reckon they've improved their glue since you did your 200. But I now see what happens and will complete the dismantling at home this evening.

Some of them come apart easily, some don't. Quality manufacturing that is. Worth every dollar (out of $3) :-)

Oh dear!

Got it open - but the next step is beyond my abilities.

I know I saw the exploded drawing - but in my innocence I thought I'd find the wires held in by screws. I guess they are fixed by solder and that is way above my skills.

So it will have to be reducing the length of the wire and re-connecting with a neat connector. Which, as some of you will no doubt say, is going to be precious little difference to folding the wire and making a neat binding with cable ties.

But fun trying !!!

Thanks for the suggestion, Andy.

Yes, I know someone locally who'd fit the bill.

Clearly it's critical that all three leads are safely re-connected if I am not to blow the 910.

It will be worth it for me as I hate these dangly wires. It's going to be doubly annoying if I ever get the TMC to work as that's yet another bit of knitting stretched across the dashboard.

I'd go for hard wiring that into the radio antenna, but that then locks me into this particular Satnav and I am sure there will be better ones around fairly soon.
