Thank you for your excellent article looking inside the 910. Have you prepared a similar article for any other TomTom devices? |

And possibly fall foul of EU disability legislation too!
But that aside, it is often so easy to avoid problems like this. Even something as simple as taking a black and white photograph, or screen print as appropriate) will highlight any colour problem areas. And, because carefully considered designs use contrast as well as colour to differentiate, it is usually clearer for all of us. |

I agree entirely about the poor quality of the mounting arrangements.
I wrote to TomTom within days of getting a 900 and they responded as though I simply had a faulty one, whereas it is clearly a poor design.
On another issue, I find that I have to reset the 900 fairly regularly. Yesterday for example it went completely haywire in the middle of a journey. No relation between the verbal instructions and the visible map and the car position indicator going through the middle of fields. Is this common, or have I got a bad one?

I haven't seen hangups like these. Are you using any third party plugins?
Or is this happening at the same point over and over? Maybe a severe map issue. _________________ Lutz

The only additions are the Safety camera data base files from this site.
I have driven many times through the area that I was in yesterday without difficulty. Once I had stopped and done a hard reset and re-entered the address I was looking for it worked fine. The problems did actually start earlier when it would not find a postcode (MK13 9JN) and I had to input the address in full. I have just tried again to input this postcode, but it will not have it. When I trawl through the postcode list for MK13, it jumps from 9HZ to 9WY, with nothing in between. If I enter the address directly it finds only MK13, so I guess there is part of the post code data base missing.
My reset difficulties are not normally as severe as this, usually it is a question of it being unwilling to switch on, or freezing when I am trying to load an address etc.
I had pretty much made up my mind to take it back shortly. |

That may be the best solution. _________________ Lutz

Did you ever get to the internal harddisk, if so what size was it, and how was it mounted?
The reason for asking is to do with the device identification, as far as I can see all the x10 range are identical apart from the storage type. I therefore beleive that the device is identified based on it storage type, 510/710 if SD card found, 910 if harddisk. This info is displayed in the power on status screen. I don't think they have a different BIOS but I maybe wrong.
I'm not a fan of physical harddisk, therefore would it be possible to connect an SD card to an appropriate IDE converter and the 910 beleive it has a harddisk, but infact its using an SD card instead? Basically remove the harddisk and replace it with an SD card & IDE converter? |

The hard disk is behind the display, well packaged. It's a 20 GB disk.
You can replace it with a solid state disk. SD is a VERY bad choice, CF makes much more sense since it already has the ATA interface.
Don't worry too much about the device ID, it is stored in a completey different place, and not directly related to the hardware. _________________ Lutz

I've had my 910 about 2 weeks now (they'd just been reduced by £100!!) and have had 'one or two' issues.
For the first two days of use, it froze about 4-5 times per day. A hard reset would 'free' the 910 and it would resume the route that it had been navigating prior to the freeze. This hasn't happened since the first few days despite the fact that it was being used all day (15hrs - truck driver), every day for the rest of the two week period.
I was planning to return it but as I had bought it from a town away from where I live, I never got around to it. The problem seemed to have gone so I didn't bother.
Some of the routes I was told to take were a bit questionable. Despite being set for fastest route (for a limited speed of 54mph) I was directed through urban housing estates when I knew for a fact it was not the quickest (or even shortest) route. Whilst crossing the Pennines (A646) I was twice told to 'turn left' when you could clearly see the road was about 30 metres long cul-de-sac which ended against the high vertical banking that makes up the base of the railway that runs above. It would've been a fool that followed that instruction!!
I find the MP3 player not the easiest to navigate - an option to just play all the files found would be nice instead of having to have them in 'playlists'. Looking through my (kids) pictures was a nice touch while I was waiting to load/unload.
My Nokia N80 can connect via Bluetooth but only for simple functions i.e. answering calls but not looking through my phonebook or text messages. The handsfree (built-in) mic is next to useless BUT using the external mic makes things just fine. I find it an easier and safer way of dealing with 'calls on the move' than any other hands-free system.
In summary, I like the 910. I waited for quite a while before forking out that much £$€'s and the £100 reduction tipped me over the edge. It's a cracking bit of kit but not the 'be-all-and-end-all'. _________________ marcustandy,

If you want true random selections to be played press the Options button (lower Left) and check the box for "Shuffle songs" - Mike |

Lutz,
I already have the Tomtom Go,with maps of the UK and USA on SD cards. Do you think for me the best upgrade would be the 710, as you do not seem to be in favour of the hard disk in the 910.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to explain as to why? My Best Regards Mike Marsh. |
