|
|
Hi folks!
I've been lurking about here for a few days, reading messages and simply getting more and more confused about what I want. I thought I liked the look of the I-mate PDA-N but I really need some advise. Perhaps you can give me some suggestions and help clear the fog I'm in.
Here's the functionality I need.
A PDA with:-
Wifi
Bluetooth,
Plenty of RAM, ROM
Extention slots
Enough power to run tomtom and memory map
Enough battery power for a few hour's walking in the countryside.
Built in GPS or separate bluetooth GPS (SiRF-III ??)
Budget:- £0-£250 excluding GPS software (or a little more if worth it)
All suggestions greatly appreciated |

Welcome to the forum, with a budget figure of £250 the iMate pda-n is probably the only device that does most of what you list:
Wifi YES
Bluetooth YES
Plenty of RAM, ROM 32MB RAM/ 128MB ROM (sufficient for most use)
Extension slots One SD Card slot
Enough power to run TomTom and memory map Capable of doing this
Enough battery power for a few hour's walking in the countryside. over 4 hours from battery with GPS switched on (BT/ WiFi OFF)
Built in GPS or separate Bluetooth GPS (SiRF-III ??) SiRF-III Integral
I have been using one of these for around 9 months, screen size is on the smaller size, but the quality and contrast it provides are excellent, its not a heavy unit either, so out walking you don't feel like you are carrying a brick!
The range of accessories that shipped with my unit also impressed me, all the usual stuff plus car charger, car Mount, screen protection and for once a leather case that is actually usable - Mike |

I use a Dell Axim 51V, which tbh is a brilliant unit. I have films, pictures, music, games and all sorts of alongs.
Recently added TT6 with there blue tooth GPS and again excellent. No connection problems at all.
The only issue I have at the moment is using the navigate to contacts function.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Will the Imate run with both tomtom and memory map installed at the same time? Reason I ask is just that my friend had tomtom installed on a cheapish HP Ipaq with a 233mhz processor and it really couldn't do anything else. Office applications crashed or locked up the machine. He ended up getting rid of tomtom and using the sat-nav software that came with the pda.
The Dell Axim 51V looks more up-to-date specs wise but it's a little expensive; being nearly £300 and without GPS. |

The Imate will run both software packages you mention, both can be loaded to the device at the same time with no problems. If you intend to run both applications simultaneously then it might struggle, you would also need to share the GPS data between the two applications, it can be done, but would you intend runni both apps at the same time?
I have done this so know it is possible, but in practice not really necessary - TomTom for in car, Memory Map for off roadi/ walking - Mike |

Thanks Mike
I dont intend to run them at the same time, just have them both installed at the same time so you've answered my question.
Thanks again

Hi themoron
I have a Dell X50V PDA which is the predecessor to the X51V as described above by space_cowby. The X50V is also a brilliant unit but has WM2003 and less ROM than the X51V. It is also cheaper.
However mine runs perfectly with TT5, TT6, iGO, Memory Map and R66. I have tried all these packages over the 18 months I have had the unit. The X50V will also (just about) run TT and Memory Map at the same time. I have done this by sharing the GPS data as Mike has indicated and the PDA processor can just handle to load.
I use a cheap BT77 GPS and connect with no problems on Bluetooth.
I can also surf the web with wi-fi on GNER / Virgin trains whilst at high speed as well as with any other available static networks. |

Please bear in mind the X50V and X51V from Dell run a true VGA screen (very nice in use) but this uses the processor power more to render the images than a QVGA screen which the pda-n is equipped with.
The processor speed in the Dell is quite handy when running multiple applications, other lesser units can do the same trick because they only have a quarter of the screen (pixel count) to render - on board graphics chip etc can help, but the larger screen either means more weight (battery) or less time in actual use.
Neither of the Dell products have a built in GPS receiver, which means carrying another device in the pocket, another battery to worry about, the all in one device is a better all round option IMHO, that is why I purchased the HTC Artemis which is nearly identical in size to the pda-n with the same functionality PLUS its a phone, when is your mobile phone contract due for renewal? this could be a cheaper option all together - Mike |

So I have to buy a micro sd card rather than a standard sd card? It doesn't say that anywhere in the specs I've looked at |

The Pda-n uses normal SD cards and certainly works with a 2GB card - Mike |

Just an update.
I carefully considered the Imate PDAN but as my father is going to be using it as well, he wasn't too happy with the smallish 2.8" screen size. So in the end I opted for the Asus My Pal A639. I've ordered it and am just waiting for stock to come in. It's the same machine as the A636N (416Mhz CPU, 64Mb RAM, Sirf 3 GPS, bluetooth, wifi) but with an integrated 1Gb flash disk.
I'll tell you how I get on once I've received it.
Again, thanks for all the help
