Does anyone know why after installing all the new poi categories that only some of them are showing on my unit? They are all there individually in my map folder but KFC for instance does not appear! Is there a limit to the number of poi you can have installed on the unit?
Thanks

Graham, your device will be using TomTom version 6, there is a limit of 100 custom POI categories, if you go over the limit only certain POI's will be visible, there is no logic as to which ones though!
How many individual .ov2 files have you loaded to the device - Mike

Thank you for that - Well I have done a couple of my own and have also the camera database from here which I prefer with individual speeds so I presume I would be better downloading these new ones in group form then instead of individually!

All TT Devices using V6.xxx will have a limit of 100 POI Categories.

can you not delete some of the standrd poi's to increse the amount you can put on?

Also does one '.ov2' file constitute 1 out of the 100 you can put on? (Might be a bit of a silly question, but i just wanted to clarify!)

The built-in POI's have no effect on the number of 3rd Party POI's.

Each OV2 File counts towards the 100.;)

Anyone know why TT have introduced this limitation? It seems a little stupid to me? Have they done it to discourage 3rd Parties producing POI databases?

Hey its actually better than before, in version five we had to work with 39 custom categories, so with 100 to go at using version six its a big improvement - Mike

Hmm... Confused (Newbie -forgive me.. :o )

Does this mean that if you create 1 OV2 file with say 15 sub categories, like a camera database, does this still count as 1? or do you need to make 1 file per list i.e. 15 ov2 files?

Clear as mud? can you have subcategories in an OV2 file? If no are limited in the the number of entries in a category?

Regards,

Trevor

If you create a single POI category (say TVR dealerships - if they still exist) it can contain tens, hundreds or thousands of individual locations, each with their own name and telephone number.

Take Shell Petrol stations, a good few hundred locations in one POI file.
Take BP Petrol stations, again a few hunded locations in the single POI file.
If you load ALL the petrol stations as a SINGLE POI file it will contain significantly more individual locations, but they might be other petrol companies, the sub-categories are rolled into a single POI file as part of your download selection.

I am not too sure where you have got the figure of 15 from? it is true there are only 15 specific inbuilt POI warning sounds, but this limitation can be overcome by using the ogg file method for warnings. Using TomTom version 6 you have a limit of 100 custom POI categories that can each contain thousands of locations - Mike

I was just thinkng, a dangerous thing I know, but if I set up 15 poi warnings I wouldn't remember which sound went with which point of interest.

I generally find that I only need a couple of warnings at one time - speed cameras and to be honest I only use one file - I could not care less whether it is a gatso or mobile or whatever - if its a potential speed camera location I want to know when it is near.

The other files that are useful are petrol or cash points - and if I need petrol or cash I generally don't mind who supplies it.

There are plenty of other pois that I switch on for a particluar reason and to have up to 100 extra points of interest is plenty. You can add or delete at will. For example this summer on holiday in France I added petrol stations, chateaux, restaurants, theme parks, supermarkets, cash points, campsites, aire de repos, peage and a few others. In total 10 or 12 extra pois. After my holiday I removed them and will update them for next year.

Regards

Thanks RQ & Mike for your responses.

The figure 15 was coincidental to the number of warnings available, and was just "plucked out of the air" really.

So my understanding is that there are NO Subcategories in an OV2 File. As I download the POI data from this site in the category "Shopping", for instance, each individual shopping chain will be an OV2 file, Yes?

Interested to hear more on the ogg file warning methods. Do you have a quicklink for me?

NB:-This site is a fantastic resource. the manufacturers should take note.

THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE 8) Yet another subscription is on the way! Kerching!! Laughing

Keep it up guys & Gals.

Best wishes to all in 2007.

Trevor
