See here.

The Zycast SG-278 is a SiRFStarIII Bluetooth GPS and has the much asked for Hardware ON/OFF Switch.

In testing we got in excess of 10hrs of use and sensitivity was easily a match for other comparable devices.

The SG-278 is available from GPSForLess for a very reasonable £54.99.

I have bought one of these and can agree with Mikes review. Its sensitivity is excellent and I have actually got 12 hours out of it in one charge. Not got used to the way the three led indicators show info but I am sure it is only a matter of getting used to them

Excellent service from GPSforLess and no I have no connection with the outfit other than a very satisfied customer

Darren

A thousand pardons for not giving credit for the review where it should have been aimed.

I have just received my Zycast SG-278 Bluetooth receiver and a HP Ipaq PDA/Mini USB 5 volt charger to power the unit along with my PDA.

I have bonded and found the GPS unit and everything seems to function correctly. However, I found that when I power the Zycast GPS unit with the dual charger, and then disconnect the unit, the Zycast will not them operate on internal battery. It will however operate still if I plug the dual charger back in.

The only way to get the Zycast to operate back on battery was the drop the battery out and re-install it, or plug the unit into the charger that came with unit on mains supply, which seems to reset the unit back to battery operation.

Any ideas, or is this normal operation?

It sounds like a problem with the output of your dual charger. Perhaps when using the dual charger the output voltage drops to a level where the Zycast receiver cuts off to self protect the battery. I have however only ever charged the Zycast gsp unit from the supplied charger and not had any problem. The Zycast battery lasts so long I do not need to charge my pda and the receiver at the same time. There are some real technical brains on these forums who may have a more scientific answer

No such problem with mine either, remove mains/external power and it switches to battery. In fact it should be operating on battery regardless with the external charger simply topping up the battery?

Can one have it switched on using an external power supply without the battery fitted?

Cheers
