Hi all well it seems that TomTom is giving us a new firmware as a Christmas present “Ver 6.522” is out at last.
And so far it seems to work a treat with the TMC looking at radio stations then locking on to 100.7 and then downloading the TMC information.

The main difference seems to be that you can now see all this happening and you don’t get a green light until it see traffic info.

So get downloading and use your TMC at last…….

Just on m6 don't panic wife is driving! Locked to classic and was receiving updates from corley to stafford services then lost the 100.1 carrier. Trying to manual tune but the signal just isn't strong enough. J3 is the pad you want on the pcb if you wish to make the wire longer.

Well now that you are all getting traffic info...

I drove down the M6 madness last Sunday - another jam at J10 to J8 so traffic re-routed me throught B'ham to J9 of M6 south. J9 is closed as it turns out and the diversion and TT navigated me to...up the M6 North to J10 to turn around and join the traffic jam South which is what we were avoiding in the first place.

Useful? - hell no - so how do we get TT to correct their traffic info - the slip road had been closed for the last 6 months it turns out.

Secondly - anyone know how to get TTOV2 to advise of the next route instruction earlier - I find if two instructions are close together then it often gets me in the wrong lane which gives me no time to get over a lane. Yesterday it told me to keep right going up the M42 past the M6 junction so we were in the right hand lane. After that it said keep left but there wasnt enough time to move over. Consequently we went up the M6 toll and paid for the priviledge of 4 miles. So instead of saying keep right we should have been told keep in the middle lane to follow M42 THEN take the next left.

Any ideas?

This is where common sense comes into play, when TT is telling you to "keep right" it is actually telling you to take the right hand road at a fork, it isn't telling you to go into lane 3 and sit there !! If you use the roads signage etc this should make things clearer.

I would imagine that traffic info is just that ie traffic info, and the actual re-routing and planning is as normal, with the GPS using whatever mapping info the manufacturer subscribes to.In the case of Tom Tom it's Teleatlas and Garmin it's Navteq.
So it's really up to the mapping companies to keep their products up to date, but as has been shown this can take a year or so between updates.

I disagree as I have had the same problem on the M62 Near Leeds and I know I am not the only one as I saw two other cars in front of me that had Tom Toms on, the unit said keep right and then missed the junction so we had to go down to the next junction and turn around, it looked a bit like a tom tom convention.
So point is remember that its a navigation AID and not the all singing and dancing answer and wont tell you what you can see out the window which will tell you whic junction is heading in the direction you need, so by all means you yoiur sat navs just dont forget the road signs either

I just tried manually setting mine and in the time it takes for the tuning circle to rotate twice it goes back to auto.

I just can't get this bloody thing working. I've had it since the week of launch in Germany and so far have had traffic info once and for all of 5 mins when in the middle of London. Sad

Well - TT are supposed to list all road closures, lane closures accidents and so on. This isnt a mapping issue - the road is there - TT just need to advise that it closed for repair. BTW - TTOV2 Europe uses Navteq maps.

On the issue of telling folk to keep right and not using the right hand lane of the motorway - this doesnt make sense. The right hand lane goes right ? At 70+ in heavy traffic you cant (safely) just switch 3 lanes within 0.25 of a mile. As said above there were at least 2 other cars with TT who made a dramatic veer across 2 lanes, over white hatching and onto the M42.

Back to the thread topic though - overall - I am not that impressed with TT Traffic - even via GPRS. There have been numerous occaisions when I have been warned of a traffic delay due to congestion on the M6 (8AM Saturday) only to whizz straight through. It is always around services. I think it is caused by lorries in the services which are used to record data on road congestion for transmission to TT. TT then process the data and put it on their server. If a lorry driver takes a coffee break and the road traffic is very light then this gets onto the server as an anomaly which sorts itself when another TT user sends data for that stretch or road.
I always run my old AA Trafficmaster alongside TT Traffic. and look at the matrix signs. Too often TT Traffic is inaccurate. So once your aeriels are all sorted out then be warned.

I think you are missing my point, TT doesn't tell you to "Get into the outside lane at all costs", it tells you to "keep right", so common sense should tell you that you stay right when the junction splits!

You shouldn't be doing 70+ in ANY type of traffic let alone heavy traffic, no wonder you had problems, and making a "dramatic veer" across two lanes and the white hatchings could result in immediate disqualification( I appreciate you didn't say you did).

And before anyone says that I have a holier than thou attitude, I don't, I just don't blame everything else when I screw up, my point is if you are unsure about the road or your surroundings then perhaps 70+ in heavy traffic isn't the ideal speed to be doing.

The keep left/right is more important in the USA where the far right hand lane has a tendacy of becoming the exit lane! We did 1700miles in california with our TT910 this summer and we learnt this keep left business the hard way!

Keeping this on topic, I fitted a hirchmann internal amplified antenna yesterday, didn't get any info at home but did around Junction 2 of the M6. Too early to say whether its made a big difference.

The map data is never going to take account of short term road closures and the traffic data is supplied to TomTom by the TMC provider which is iTIS.

This is a strange situation where the map data doesn't know about the road closure and the traffic data is not designed to report such matters and so this issue arises.
