|
|
I would appreciate help on the following:
My device is a Tomtom Go 300. The S/W version is 5.201. and I have the speed camera database (with voices) loaded from this site.
I am aware that the latest version of S/W is 6.520 and new GB maps are available. I have installed, but not used Tomtom Home on my PC.
My questions are: Is it worth installing the new software? Will this affect the operation of the speed cameras? What is the best/easiest way to do either one or both of the above?
Thanks in anticipation. |

It's usually a good idea to upgrade to new software where it comes out as it is often brought to fix earlier errors/bugs.
Upgrading the software will install a new data.chk file so your voice warnings will revert back to the default bells and boings unless you are using OGG file voice warnings. If you arn't using the OGG files you could download the appropriate updated data.chk file so the voice warnings are re-established.
I'd be inclined to use the TomTom HOME facility to keep your GO up to date with correct versions and to allow you to make backups (which you should do before commencing ANY upgrade).

Binman - I am not too experienced in this game. How do I apply the upgade after I have downloaded from the site you suggest? Will I still have to install a new data.chk file?
Thank you |

The instruction says "Copy the 6 Unzipped Files to the Root of the SD Card.
When the GO reboots it will do so 3 times. Just let it cycle till it has finished.
Normal switch on takes only about 4 secs!
Any time the GO is connected to the PC, expect the cyclic reboot on disconnection.

And yes, you always need the correct numbered version of the replacement data.chk for your software version - UNLESS you switch over to using .ogg audio files (as discussed at length here), then you can leave the original TomTom supplied data.chk in place and never have to think about it again! |

Thank you all for your help. I have successfully upgraded to 6.520 and the sound alerts have been restored. Will have to check it out further but so far so good. Next step is the GB map upgrade.
Thanks again. |

I'm glad you got it working.
At some point it might pay to experiment with the OGG file spoken voices alternative (documented in great detail elsewhere). It will then mean that whenever a newer software version comes out you won't have to go through this again.

I have just downloaded and installed, via TT Home, the new Western Europe maps. I prepared for this by replacing the original SD card with a new 2GB Viking High Speed one, onto which I copied my original card. I then checked that it all still worked ok.
The maps downloaded and installed without a problem, but my TT doesn't seem any different. I tried to navigate to a foreign destination but all it gave me were British destinations. I tried to navigate to a point on a map but the only map it showed me was of the UK. I bet I've done (or not done) something really stupid, but can you guys help?

Bazza,
Your new map has been installed alongside the existing one rather than replacing it. Just switch maps:
Change preferences/ Switch map / select the Western Europe map. _________________ Kam |
