|
|
Hi all,
Have a TT One GB and when it's turned on my details show on screen, e.g. "This device belongs to..." This is the set owner feature in preferences.
Just wondering if it's really a good idea. On the one hand, you're telling a thief where you live (nick more stuff, hold you to ransom, etc.), but on the other hand if you lost it, some kind soul could return it.
What are your thoughts on using this? And if you do, what level of information have you put?

Don't put address just contact details.
Similarly don't have home location actualy set to your home just somewhere near. |

I think it's a good idea to have something there.
I have my House Number, The first 4 digits of my postcode, Surname and contact number.
And Home is set to a road two streets away!!! _________________ Steve

I think it's good. I have my Name & Mobile number only and my "Home" is the juntion nearest my house. I wonder what the recommended approach from the Police would be? Clearly, if you get your car stolen, say with you keys, you don't want the thief to be able to drive to your own home and break in with your keys.
On a sperate note, that why I keep my house keys & car keys on a seperate ring to each other. _________________ ________________________________________

Some good advice here.
Keep in mind that any criminal taking your sat nav device could indeed find their way to your home, and nick your computer, tv, hifi etc..
.. but most houses have a computer, tv, hifi etc. Why bother travelling when any dwelling which could be much closer will do?
Just a thought.
Regards,

Since I always take it with me when I leave the car , its not necessary, and if it was stolen from my house, its unlikely they would return it if it had my home address in it! |

If like Tumbleweed you always take the TT with you it would seem to not be a problem, though you might just loose it somewhere.
I think the original thought was that had you left the device in the car and set your home address correctly. Then the theives could visit your home in the knowledge that a) your not home and b) your likely to be sometime whilst you report the theft from your car. |

I cannot for the life of me find it right now, but one thread somewhere has a whole host of superb DIY Splash Screens showing a Police authority badge and words like "This Satnav device is now being tracked for recovery" and all manner of very good ideas on this subject.
As an example, look at the bottom of page 25 of this thread.

No Richard, that's the one in my link above (I don't know how to do "This one" in red), where I refer to page 25 (by some miracle, my link takes you straight to the page 25!!). But I wish I knew how to do "This one" in red though.
The one I saw had loads of Police ones and suggestions for good wording to try to fool the nasties into believing they were about to get nicked. _________________ Dennis
