|
|
OK, I have found two bugs in the version that ships, version #5.0.2 - build 122
========================================
Problem 1)
The software wouldn't install on my Palm Tungsten E2. It always hung on either the first or second hotsync. The PC would display 'synchronising mapsonic' and the Palm would display 'synchronishing memos'. It would sit for ever doing nothing until I used CTRL-ALT-DEL to end the processes. The software would then just default back to the first install screen, deleting all the files it had copied across to the PC. This is a problem if you want to use any of the PC software like Quick Install, Mapstore or more importantly for me POI Manager, to install the speed camera database.
Solution) Make sure Hotsync manager is running, then just before the Maps 2006 software asks you to synchronise, right click on the Hoysync icon in the system tray. Select 'Custom...' and then scroll down the list of programs to where it says 'mapsonic'. Select it then click on 'Change..', altering its properties to 'Desktop overwrites PDA'. Click on OK, then progress with the Maps 2006 install.
Problem 2)
Personal POIs do not install. POI Manager goes through the motions and no error messages are brought up but they do not appear in the POI list in the software on the PDA.
Solution) There is a patch available for the GPS Navigation unit that VM distribute which corrects this, but not for the PDA software. There are two reasons why it sometimes does not work. Firstly, the POI Manager asks if you want to install the POIs to the PDA memory or the Card. They will only work if you select Card but this is not the default option. Secondly the files are given the wrong extension (PPI) instead of (POI).
Using a Palm file manager (I used Filez), simply locate the POI files in the 'VMNav_POIs' folder on the SD card and change the extension from PPI to POI. Then run the Maps 2006 application on the PDA again and the POIs should appear in the POI list under 'Settings'.
========================================
I do not claim full credit for these solutions. The first is a known issue that the Customer Services guy knew about straight away, and had the solution given. The second they also knew was an issue and also that the patch for the VM GPS units worked, but that a PDA patch was not available. Between us we worked out what the problem was and came up with the solution given here. It is also now added to the notes that the CS representatives use so anyone else calling will be given that information.
I thought I would post it here anyway for anyone else's benefit.

Hi Many thanks for posting this.
I have just upgraded from Version 4 to Maps 2006 on my T5 and had the very problem you describe, which was beginning to drive me mad.
Your solution worked perfect.
So thanks again for taking the time to post this and save many of us having to contact ViaMichelin Support.
Note. Since ViaMichelin seem to be aware of the problem why don't they put something on their website in FAQ's or other support area to tell people what to do. |

No problem. Glad it helped.
Quick question, do you own the UK&Ireland version of Maps 2006? |

I originally bought the Navigation ver 4 for Europe, but when looking at upgrading I decided that UK would be adequate for my needs, so I settled on the UK & Ireland 2006 maps.
Also, made sure I got the 30 Euro discount as a registered user.
Note. I had looked at moving to TomTom as they have just brought out a new version which looks pretty good and has features which ViaMichelin does not support. However, when the details of the release came out I found that it was not supported on the Palm T5, so I am back with Michelin. |

Do me a favour then if you can.
Plan a route from Herringthorpe Valley Road in Rotherham, to Burley Street in Doncaster.
Display the driving directions and scroll through them until you reach East Bawrtry Road. At some point along that road does it take you left onto Cross Street and then an immediate sharp right to take you back onto East Bawtry Road?
It seems to do this a couple of times during that journey and a lot of others I have done. Speed settings dont seem to have any effect and I nothing I do seems to stop it from doing it.
Not sure if the road directions have been set up wrong and the software doesn't think you can travel down those small sections of road. It always seems to happen at a junction or traffic lights. It didnt do it in version 3 or 4 of VM.
If you can feedback on here that would be great |

Hi, Sorry I failed in this. I found the Rotherham address but according to my map there is no Burley Rd in Doncaster.
I tried a number of variations but cannot find anything even similar.
Can you confirm this is correct ? |

Just for fun I tried this route with my version 2.5, and it did not make the turn into Cross Street.
I also tried it with the ViaMichelin on-line route planner, with the same result.
Does this help ? |

Thanks for trying but I have done the same calculation in versions 3 & 4, as well as using their online route planner and have not managed to replicate this strange behavior that Maps 2006 seems to exhibit.
I am convinced its a Maps 2006 bug... hopefully werfnala can confirm... |

Hi, I haven't got Maps 2006, but on my ViaMichelin 3.2, if you have it set on "Shortest route", I think it is, it will do funny things like that, It works out, the road you are on, from A to B is .4 of a mile, so it directs you from A to C to B, which is .35 of a mile, saving you .05 of a mile, so if you put it on "quickest route", it will take you straight from A to B. People have said they were on the motorway, and told to leave by the next exit, go round the rounderbout, and go back on the motorway, , its only because they have it set on shortest route. _________________ Audi A3 Sline sat nav |

.... and this particular extra kink in the route is certainly neither shorter or faster. |

Hi manoman48, well I tried what you asked and can confirm the following.
East Bawtry Rd becomes just Bawtry Rd.
Sure enough, when I get to Cross St I get directed along that to Bramley and then back down Main St, back onto Bawtry Rd again.
Hope this hepls |

definately, in fact sometimes these kinks are stupidly long compared to just staying on the road.
I could include sample pics if that helps explain it better? |

It does thanks, just proves that it isn't a setting that I have messed with or somehow I have corrupted the program. I get these 'kinks' in lots of journeys now and its really annoying. |
