Nuvi 660

Is the aerial wire a type of coax when it comes up the power lead to the point where the single wire aerial comes out on the GTM 21? If so it may be possible to snip the single wire off and connect to the car aerial coax with a splitter and perhaps an FM amplifier.

Being a non-techi can somebody explain what the advantage the FM transmitter does/would do if it was legal in the UK?

Hi

You would be able to "broadcast" the output from the nuvi to your car stereo hence louder (possibly clearer) voice instructions, bluetooth phonecalls and you can listen to MP3's audiobooks etc at a decent volume level. Of course theoretically so could anyone tuning into the same frequency in a car next to yours!

I really would decide to buy one of these, what's stopping me is that it can only support one via, that makes it pretty useless for tweaking your route and cycling use.
I'd expect an upmarket device like this to do better! Garmin, why do you have to impose this restriction and a £400 device ???

It would be nice to have via points and it sounds like it would be easy to implement but what was most important for me as I looked at various units was good traffic info and accurate mapping in a slim unit which I could slip into my jacket pocket. For me on these 3 major points the 660 currently does the best job and for that I think that Garmin deserve praise for raising the bar. I've no experience of Navman or Mio but having previously had a Tomtom I would have felt more comfortable with the interface of the GO if the TMC worked and the device form wasn't so unwieldy. I certainly wouldn't want to try cycling with a TTG0. AFAICT all the current devices have strengths and weakness and it's what you need that will determine where you can compromise.

I also have to say that Garmin's customer service has been a very pleasant surprise in this day and age; swift personal replies and genuinely useful advice.

Two advantages I have found so far with the Nuvi 660 and the TMC - it reports on traffic problems for the whole of the UK at once - whereas I have read that the Tomtom TMC only reports regional traffic.Plus I prefer the Trafficmaster data you get with the Nuvi TMC, although it does seem very thin on data for roadworks.

Also I have taken the wire out of the black plastic piece at the end of the aerial wire (I can put it back in at a later stage if I need to) and will be putting a connector on it to connect to the car aerial - tried it just by fixing it on temporarily and got traffic reception where I didn't with just the wire aerial. I can't see how you can do this with the Tomtom TMC receiver aerial as it runs from the Tomtom to the receiver, unless you cut into it.
Shame you can't use the GTM 10 with the 660.

Guys,

I'm thinking of getting a Nuvi 660. I have a Navman ATM. For the ones that have one, is it possible to save custom POIs whilst on the move and how is it done? Do the Nuvi 660 maps cover Eastern Europe (Czech Republic and Poland)?

It has detailed coverage in Poland, oddly it covers most urban areas in the west of the Czech Republic and major Urban areas in the east. It covers major urban areas for the rest of eastern Europe and the Baltic states.

I've never tried to add a favorite whilst actually moving as it sounds a bit risky but I have pulled over and done so, so presumably it shouldn't be a problem. I'll check it out on the way home.

I was just wondering if you drive past a new POi such as a speed camera and you want to capture the location if you can do it in a couple of quick taps etc.

Now that the fM Tranmitter law has changed in the UK, does anyone know if Garmin will enable the FM Transmitter in the 660?

Garmin have not indicated that they can or will.

Firstly, it's not as simple as all units now being legal - the 660 would need CE approval for the transmitter before it could be enabled.

Secondly, Garmin have implied that the European units don't have the capability for an FM transmitter.
