New way to do custom POI warnings in TomTom 5 & 6

TomTom have made us aware of a new way to use custom POI warnings in both TomTom 5 & 6 versions. This will remove the need for manipulating the data.chk file, and is much more flexible.

Here's what you need to do:

For each of your OV2 files, create a warning sound in OGG format with exactly the same name. So if you have a BP.ov2 file, create a BP.ogg fileand place it in the same map folder. (We recommend 22050 Hz sampling rate but it should not matter)

When you restart TomTom, the new sound will automatically be used. Cool, ah? (you may have to re-set the warning distance for each POI category you changed)

A good source for ogg files is http://tomtomsatnav.info/realvoice.html . But you can of course also use your own creations.

Woo Hoo! It works!! I've put the original data.chk file back in so now I can use the bells and stuff for other important things like Tesco's Cafe.
Think I might the wife to do a sexy voice, something like "Warning Red Light district ahead".

So (before I try this) what happens if you've already defined a POI warning sound from those included in the standard software. Does the similarly named ogg file override it (so the section of sound file via the UI is ignored? Or does it work some other way? Are the proximity settings still obeyed?

Ok - found the answer - the prompt for a custom sound is suppressed by the software. Cute. I winder if my orginal choce will be restored if I delete the ogg the file? Too late now and life's too short to try until I need to! ;-)

This is great, Works on x10 series as well, follow instructions, I then removed warning and then re-added it (It then doesn't give you choice of sound for that poi) Hey presto!

Excellent - even complete genius(?) like me could manage it!

Much nicer sound than the old PGPS voice! :D

Only problem how can we set additional sounds to take care of the various "specs" which, at present, are only covered by one message

Arrghh! doesn't work for me. Downloaded some ogg files, renamed them to the same as the corresponding .ov2 file in my TomTom directory, and put then in there. However when approaching a speed cam my TomTom (6.010) still sounds an alarm sound (as it did before), not the new voice ogg file

Help!

When you say you have put them in the TomTom directory can you please clarify this?
The .ov2 & .bmp and the .ogg files MUST all be the same name (just the file extension differs) all three files MUST be placed in to the current (probably GB) map folder for this to work - Mike

Yes, they are all name the same (.bmp, .ov2 and .ogg, eg gatso_20.bmp, gatso_20.ogg, gatso_20.ov2) and they are all in my Great_Britain folder.

Next you need to reset your 'warn when near POI' settings for each POI.

However, this time it won't ask which sound you want to use as it will see that you already have your .ogg sound file for that POI. All it will ask is the distance you want the warning and whether you want it only if on route. Smile

I have a curiousity question - Why would you choose anything other than "only warn if on route"? Why would you want to be warned of something not on your route?
