|
|
I'm thinking of moving from an iPAQ running TTN5 with a bluetooth GPS receiver (upgraded from TTN2 originally) to a 910 because I like the idea of it all being one unit, rather than needing to remember all the 'bits'.
I use my current setup abroad quite a bit in hire cars, and was wondering:
1. What's it like without the mount. Can I have my passenger handhold / stick on a ledge / etc., and still use it usefully? With my iPAQ I can normally stick it in a cupholder or somewhere to get me by. I'm not sure what the 910 formfactor would be like
2. What's the battery life like? In the rental car scenario, how many hours will it run? Can I use a charger in the car without the mount?
3. When the battery runs flat completely, do you lose anything?
Cheers for the input.

Hi
I have not long had a 910. With which I am highly pleased. It requires a mount to charge the battery, but in your case you could use the 'Home' mount.
Everything is stored ona small hard disk, so I assume that running the battery flat would not cause any problems.
I haven't run mine flat, but I estimate that the battery life to be around 4 hours.
Hope this helps

hardrives take more power to run than solid state devices.. they are also more prone to drop damage.. perhaps a lesser model might be better for u..
my 300 is okay handheld by the passenger.. it sits on the dash okay if there is a flat place to sit it.. it could be used without the incar charger okay..
a new go one europe fits in the pocket but wouldnt stand up on its own and the batteries dont last long enough..
but unless u really need the hardive device i wouldnt think it was your best option for portability.

Yeah, if you want portability, have a look at the new V2 TomTom One European Version. |

a lot of the small fit in the pocket size factor comes from smaller batteries.. the downside being they dont last very long without a charge..
very good for one kinda portability but not another.. perhaps thats one reason the V2 has a slower cpu.. to make the batteries last a bit longer..

I use my 910 in and out of various rental cars, it only takes a couple of mins to move the mount and assocated cables, if the car doesn't have a charge socket ask for a different car!
I certainly wouldn't be happy having a £500 device loose in the car, if its not secured down then it is likely to get damaged, or cause you to loose concentration when / if it moves around. Also using the mount allows me to connect the audio output to the cars system for better sound quality, most (not all) modern cars have an Aux input for the stereo - Mike |
