Not true. I manage to receive GPS signals in an Audi A4 and a Vauxhall Zafira.

Please note, some car manufacturers are using athermic heat reflecting windsheilds which also reflect the GPS signal, blocking it from entering the car. These are as follows:

Audi - all models 2001 onwards

BMW 740

Citroen Xsara Picasso

Jaguar X-Type

Peugeot "07" range

Renault - all models 2001 onward and Laguna

Vauxhall - all models 2002 inward and Zafira

VW Passat after 2002

The solution to this problem is to use a re-radiating antenna which will retransmit the GPS signal inside the car.

2003 Saab 9-5 Aero Estate with heat absorbent tinted glass. Ipaq 2210 with TomTom Bluetooth receiver. No problems at all - 6-9 birds when placed on the dash close to the windscreen and even 3-5 when placed on the passenger seat as an experiment although obviously in this position there was some signal dropout.

Hi My Setup is as follows:

2001 Ford Mondeo (New Shape)

Ipaq 3850, Navman Jacket & Smart ST Pro

I have the Ipaq mounted to the left of the steering wheel, I use a re-radiating antenna mounted on the roof with excellent results, without the re-radiating antenna the signal is very poor.

One thing I did find was that initially I had the mag mount ariel touching one of the roof bars, for ages I still had long ttff's. Just before I binned the lot I thought I would try moving the ariel, all I did was turn it through 90 degrees so that it was around 2 inches from the roof bar and what a difference it makes. Now by the time I have got my seatbelt on and engine runnning I have a good 5 sat lock.

Now I am happy, I guess the roof bars were somehow affecting the performance of the re-radiating ariel.

Wife's new 2003 Audi A4 TDi with heated front screen, Haicom 203+Jornada - excellent reception. Sats - 5 min 8 typical.

BTW Haicom receiver is the dog's knob!! Especially at the price. Leave it plugged into the lighter socket whilst PDA is removed and TTFF with TomTom Navigator is virtually instantaneous when reconnecting the PDA.

I had a drive of a Renault Laguna and there is no reception at all though the windscreen of this car. It had the "heat reflecting" windscreen which has a distinctive blue tinge to it. I think this is standard on all Renault's with Air Conditioning.

The GPS works fine out the rear and side windows, but the windscreen does limit the visibility somewhat.

It is interesting to note that there was a clear, non heat reflecting section around the internal rear view mirror where the GPS (a GPS-V) does work. I expect that you could mount a GPS antenna or Mouse/BT type receiver in this section under the rear view mirror and it should work.

I didn't have my radar detector with me, but it looks like this clear section would also allow you to mount the radar detector on the sun visor or suction it to the windscreen so it will work properly. Very thoughtful of them. Wink

I have a Peugeot 406, 2002 model.. Standard Windscreen

Using Toshiba E750 with wired Tom Tom GPS..

Reception on the front dash was terrible. It kept losing signal. Moved GPS to the back window and it works fine..

iPAQ in a dash-mounted cradle with integral Fortuna XTrack in CF sleeve. TTN2.

No problems at all almost all of the time. Occasionally loses the signal while driving but usually locks 5-7 satellites. No need for external antenna in my experience.

Positioned in centre of dash. No reception problems at all. Regularly get 6 sats, have seen 10. Drops to 3 or 4 occasionally.

Ford Focus with climate pack including heated front screen.

Have my Ipaq with CF card mounted to far right edge of front window, it just misses the heating elements and i have managed to achieve 11 sats in past so far, anywhere under the window and the Holux GM270 and the Haicom MMF dont get a fix, although the Rikaline X7 did, even tucked away in the glove box, but its that slow at updating its pretty much useless for in-car sat nav.

Alfa Romeo 156 Sportwaggon 2003 model.

Coated windscreen.

Very poor signal using Royal Tek Sapphire and Clip On Fortuna Bluetooth (in ST mode). Fortuna unit is fine in XT mode 6-10 sats.
