|
|
Hi folks,
I'm interested in finally upgrading my old PDA UK version of Tomtom in favour of the new v6. Before I decide to part with my hard earned cash can anyone that has used it tell me how the new Speeding Alert works?
I'm only thinking of upgrading because of this new feature (and the new maps if I decide it's worth it) but I can't find anywhere on the Tomtom official site that explains what it is or how it works.
Does it make some kind of sound or is it just a visual warning?
And.. can it be turned off if not desired?
Appreciate any info on this one. Thank you. |

The new maps have road speeds coded in for the major roads. The speed display shows your current speed followed by the rated speed (e.g. 55/60).
If you go over the limit the display (e.g. 70/60) goes red.
Some roads are not speed coded so nothing changes from TT5. |

And some (parts of some) roads are wrongly coded, too. _________________ Tim |

out of interest will this also work in say 30/40 mph zones as well or is it still like tt5 where you can only set the 1 limit

If the road is speed-coded and you exceed the coded speed, you will get the warning. It is only visual. I think, but can't be sure, that upto 5mph over the display is steady red and more than 5mph over it flashes red. _________________ Tim |

Thanks Tim. I aint upgrading on the basis of that! I don't consider that to be a great selling point. I know you shouldn't rely on it for speeding etc... but even the law gives you only around 10%. So 5mph over 30 isn't good.
I try not to speed but in unfamiliar areas it can sometimes be difficult.
I'll wait and see if someone comes up with a 3rd party piece of software that works properly. |

When I say the law, I mean that's usually the margin you get over the limit before you'll be prosecuted. (To account for differences on speedometers). |

remember your speedo is probably out by around 4 mph, so when you think your doing 5mph over the speed limit, your really only around 1mph over. Hence if your doing 75 in a 70 zone your true speed is 71 and the police wont stop you, but if your doing 80 your true speed is 76 and they will stop you. Therefore the tomtom alert at 5mph over is about right _________________ Garmin Emap, Ipaq 2210 with TomTom Navigator 5, TomTom One, Pioneer AVIC-X1R, TomTom 910 (stolen). Try GPS speed sentry, works really well, the only issue being that you need another program such as GPS gate to run two GPS bits of software from the same signal input |

i doubt if it works where you have variable speed limits like on the m25 and m42 either. |

Can this feature be turned off? I like the solid white speed display of v5. |
