The speed camera POIs are available from the speed camera page (link at the top of every page) or Here though you need to be a member to access them. _________________ Samsung Note 20 ultra

Hi Tinpusher,
Are you asking about the PC or PPC version of Memory Map? My answer above referred to the PC version, and I doubt if the PPC version is fast enough to handle the complete PGPSW database.
On the PC version it is possible to set a "Proximity Alarm" to sound at any specified radius from any Waypoint (POI). But unless you get down to block editing the whole CSV database before you import it, you'll probably have to set up every one of the POIs individually!
The PPC version also supports Proximity Alarms, and I believe it may execute a (sound) file, but I've never tried it (and I can't find anything in the PPC Help file).
Hmmmm... I wasn't aware that there was a difference between the PC and PPC versions of Memory Map. Rather naievely, maybe, I thought that I'd just be able to load MM onto a PDA and then use the obscene amounts of QCT files I have.
I'm pretty familiar with MM on the PC, but POIs in this format I haven't come across.
As it happens, I'm in the mapping industry (at the moment- I'm an aerial survey pilot working for getmapping.com).

Hi Tinpusher,
When will you finish Scotland?
A remarkable amount of the PC functionality of MM *is* available on the PPC (but not 3D World, etc.). However, even on my PC, the PGPSW file I tried seemed to take a long time to load.
Generally, you can copy the complete MM2004 .QCT files over to a PPC (not Palm though) and MM2004 will display them. Also copy the .QED files if you want elevation data. However, the v5 map files are too large, because the PPC/MM can only open files up to 300-400MBytes (depending on the card speed).
So, using v5.0.2 and above, you can cut the maps into suitable areas by surrounding them by a closed route, right-click on the route and select Operations : Send enclosed map ... , preferably sending them via a card reader.
It's the pet-peeve at the moment. Scottish weather is famously rubbish, and this year in particular has been very bad (we didn't fly at all in August, in Scotland or anywhere else). We need cloudless (or near-cloudless) skies to fly- we can accept a few cirrus but anything more grounds us.
We were hoping to have Scotland finished this year, but the weather will most likely push it back to next year. This means that the data should be available some time around early 2008.
Going back to the MM on a PPC thing, do I need to get a copy of MM for a PPC or can I just upload the MM I've already got to the PPC and it will work OK?

Hi Tinpusher,
So MM obviously did the "right thing" by sending out a preliminary DVD of the available Scottish photography to Premium Edition customers.
The PPC application is a special version which is installed from the PC application via "Mobile Device : Install Pocket Navigator". This has to be via Active Sync (which must be the latest v.4.2 for MMv.5.1.1 and above) to transfer the License details.
You can install MM2004 and MMv5 (and even the European edition) as separate applications on both the PC and PPC if you wish. It's much quicker to transfer the map files using a card reader (an option in the "send map.." dialogue).
The PPC program file is quite small (~400kB) but I prefer to install it on the flash card because the (potentially large) placenames index file has (or had?) to go into the same folder. However, the latest release history mentions that index files are handled differently in v.5.1.1, but I haven't investigated yet.
MM have an excellent support forum here (although the search is a bit dodgy, and they don't send email notifications of replies ).
Hehe! Yep, it would seem that MM have done this to keep their regular customers happy. Mind you, MM are regular customers of ours, and we don't like the fact that we're behind on the Scottish photography. We do this for other customers as well. However we're 100% controlled by the weather.
Rest assured, as soon as there is a hint of cloudless skies in Scotland, we're there ready to take pictures using our Vexcel Ultracam-D (see http://community.webshots.com/user/flightimages02a). We need no encouragement to get up there- we stay park the aeroplane at Prestwick and stay in the nearby Western House Hotel at Ayr Racecourse, which is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in! And for a bargain price. Oh, and I have a girlfriend up there too. So all in all, they're hard pushed to keep us away!
Back to the topic in hand. I'm not quite sure I understand you correctly. Am I right in thinking that:
1. If I have MM v.5.1.1 and above, this can *only* be installed on a PPC via Active Sync v.4.2 and above;
2. With MM v.4.4.3 (which I have) this is best installed on a PPC by copying the program files and the maps to a blank memory card, and running the program directly from the memory card?
I'm known to Jason on the MM forums, I've put a similar question in there. I'd also like your opinion on this too. I need to get a GPS/PDA setup which will allow me to view the CAA charts (and overlays) as we're flying around. At the moment I am considering:
Option 1- Dell X50 or X51 and Sumvision ABG108 Bluetooth GPS (NMEA)
Option 2- Mio 350 integrated GPS/PDA
The advantage with the Dell/Sumvision setup is that we can position the GPS antenna on the nose of the aircraft. With the Mio 350, we'd need to get an aerial extension or external antenna.

Hi Tinpusher,
Sorry, your photo link doesn't work for me.
No, you still need to use Active Sync to install the MM 2004 application, but only require the latest version (of AS) for, I think, MMv5.0.6 onwards (when it became necessary to detect whether it's a PPC or Smartphone device). It is *possible* to install MM directly from a .CAB file on the SD card, but MM don't reveal how to install the license key!
However, when you install (any) software via Active Sync, you normally get an "install to default location?" prompt, where the default always seems to be the PPC RAM. If you want to install on a card or system ROM, then answer "No" and select the required path.
It's potentially much easier (than v5) to install complete MM2004 maps onto the PDA memory card, if you want to. This is because the .QCT map files are only about 300MB and compatible with the PPC application. So you can copy the files directly onto the flash card in a reader, I believe to any directory, but normally it's a QCT folder within the MM (or "Pocket Navigator") folder. Also copy the corresponding .QED files for elevation data if you want to use it. The placenames file also can be installed manually, but it's easier just to select "PDA : Send .. placenames to PDA" within MM.
Sorry, I don't have any experience of those PDAs, but the Mio does seem very good value and the SiRF3 GPS receiver that it contains is incredibly sensitive (it's also in my Holux BT GPS). However, I do feel that an integrated GPS must limit the ability to locate and orientate both the PDA screen and GPS antenna optimally. In my car, I usually get very acceptable GPS reception using either a wired "gps mouse" or a BlueTooth receiver, placed on the dashboard close to the windscreen glass. Of course, *I'm* not allowed to use a BT GPS in any aircraft !
I presume you're aware that many external GPS "antennas" contain an amplifier which usually needs to receive power from the GPS receiver (via the antenna cable), so you may need to check compatibility.

I have tried these in MM v 5.2.7 and I get the error message:
Incorrect bit map format, icons must be 32x32 16 colour.
The bmp files appear to be 22x22 and 256 colour. OK it is easy to edit them, but maybe they need to be updated for the downloads or added if different versions use different formats? _________________ Drivelux

We provide icons in a format that serves 99% of the devices. Given that our database is used with MM by only a handful of members we don't offer a custom POI icon. _________________ Darren Griffin

I don't know if the CSV files for MM are used in any other device but if not, there is an improvement that could be made to them. Where the cameras are separated into different files by type, importing the second set overwrites the first icon, then importing the third set overwrites the second icon and so on until when all five sets are imported they are all showing the fifth sets icon.
The reason this happens is that on each import the icon is imported as icon 1001 (Defined in cell reference B1). Also column D in each of the spreadsheets lists icon 1001 for each waypoint or camera. If in spreadsheet 2 cell B1 was changed to 1002 and all the entries in column D to 1002, then spreadsheet 3 to 1003, and so on this overwriting of icons would not happen. _________________ Drivelux
