Does the GPSlim236 use a standard USB charging cable?

I'm guessing not, because a 3rd party rj11 to miniUSB lead doesn't work, nor does my phone charger, both seem to hard reset the device.

Is there an RJ11 to mini usb lead that does work, or is it possible to modify the one I have so it will?

USB leads from the PC work fine, so it's peculiar to non data leads. Can anyone help??

Yes!

ANY USB cable should work. Certainly, I use a number of different cables (PC to USB, SmartPhone charger to MiniUSB, cigarette lighter with USB to MiniUSB) to charge my Holux 230/236 units and they ALL work fine.

Not sure what you mean by rj11 - this is the small American style telephone jack which you see on some phones and DSL routers. Do you mean the larger rectangular USB connector (called the type A, I think) that you see on your PC?

The thing to watch for is the GPS probably requires a "high power" USB power source, so some USB hubs (ie without external power) and some laptops may not supply enough current to charge the device.

Switch the GPS off, plug in your phone charger/PC/Cigarette lighter and the green light should come on. When it goes off, it's charged. Works for me anyway. Confused

I do mean RJ11 as my in-car mount uses it as an adaptor for GPS charging and neither that lead (tried 3 thinking it was a faulty cable) not my phone (T-Mobile MDA Pro) will charge the GPSlim 236 Confused

It's also a little more than not charging as it seems to hard reset the device if the cable is pushed in (irrespective of whether the lead is powered or not)

I should add (as I can't edit!) that USB cables from PC to GPS work fine as does the charger it was supplied with, it seems to only be the cheaper "power only" (i.e +v and ground wires only) cables that it has problems with
