|
|
I have just burst the screen on my Ipaq and it appears to be around £175 for a replacement - not really worth it I dont think.
other than being extremely off I need to find a replacement,
TomTom 510 was high on the list but a waste of TomTom Nav and BT GPS that I already own.
Whats the recomended option these days? Latest VGA PDA (whatever that is) or some kind of smart phone perhaps??
Any advice much appreciated, I'm of for a stiff drink now to console myself... :o( |

There is not really any VGA Pocket PC to speak of. If you like it a little bigger look at the Xda Exec (and the varieties) - came out two years ago and still is the non plus ultra. And it's more difficult to break the screen on that one... _________________ Lutz

Well Lutz, the 4700 is VGA, dude.
Sorry about your kit, AlanK m8. I have the 4700, and love it, although I wish to God I could get rid of Winduhs and run [url=http://opie.handhelds.org]Opie[/i]. But ya know, got to have nav.
My bro has the Jam PDA/phone, and phone reception is terrible. Nice idea, but not there yet.
Although I haven't looked very hard in the past six months, I don't know of anything better than the 4700. I don't trust anything other than HP. Might consider springing. |

The Dell Axim X51v is also a VGA PDA.
Not that I recommend buying one, just informing you... |

the xda exec is a great piece of kit but is bulky, though it is quite liveable with and as it has a clamshell design the screen is protected while in your pocket or bag etc.
if the exec is a little big and you can live with out a vga screen then have a look at the xda minis or the new 3g varient the tytyn (available sim free only at the moment) its much more pocketable then the exec and should everything you need although the minis uses mini sd cards instead of standard sd cards
I have bith devices and they ad both competant pda/phones _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. Good bye IOS don't let the door hit you on the way out .

It's really tough.
I've recentely tried (and sent back!) O2 XDA exec - too big, poor phone, imate JamIn - too small, poor screen, Hp ipaq 6915 - square screen and too small. I haven't tried any Dell Axim's, the new Loox look good though.
Was thinking about the T830 - but it's a square screen. Perhaps the N series then? Personally though nothing touches the 4700 for me. |

been having a look on the high street at the weekend and looks like either replace/repair the Ipaq - or just get a TomTom Go.
Dont like any of the smart phones for pretty much the same reasons as you have above.
Have to decide if I really need the PDA function part any more. |

(Wat's wrong with a square screen? Want round?)
(Wat's a 'high street'? A street on a hill? Or where weed is sold?) |

How about the Orange SPV M3100 based on the HTC tytn?
I've just got one and it's really really good:
- Similar size to the SE P990I. Quite attractive looking too
- Great touch screen and loads of shortcut buttons, plus a jog wheel and DPAD
- Slide out QWERTY keyboard that has a good typing feel to it
- Windows Mobile 5 with fast 400MHz processor
- 3G QUAD band phone with pretty long battery life and video calling
- 80211bg wifi and supports Skype
- Voice dialling, with picture displays and mp3 ringtones
The only real downsides are a need to purchase Micro-SD cards (about £50 for 2GB) and the slide out mechanism build quality isnt top notch, other than that it's nearly the perfect all-rounder phone/pda. |

Best phone I've ever had. Plus it works with my BMW bluetooth to a certain degree which is a bonus.
I guess it depends on what you want from a phone. I love being able to use it as a backup for navigation including memory map hiking, whereas previously I needed 2 devices.
I get good use out of the video calling, plus the wifi and 3G. Also, you can have a big picture displayed of the caller to accept or reject with special software. Plus you get funky notifications when you miss calls, get text messages, Outlook emails, etc. The big touchscreen dialler works well too combining number dialing with contact lookup from the same key presses. A first - the voice dialing works in the car at speed, which it hasnt done on my previous phones.
Obviously the WM5 means you get to install loads of games, music and movies (with a 'Micro' SD card )
I didn't think I'd use the hw keyboard being so used to text keypads and PDA virtual keyboards but I use it nearly all the time now. The keyboard is better than the IPAQ built in models that I've used, although I haven't figured out how to use num-lock???
2MP camera is good enough and the video recording looks good on the clear touch screen.
When using opera and wifi or 3g, browsing becomes easy, especially when you use the scroll wheel on the side to scroll down the pages (it also has a click accept when you press it in to select links etc).
All in all a top phone and I'm so glad I didn't get the P990i, which I'm not knocking as a phone, but I personally think this phone is better. Quite a lot better actually, and streets ahead of the Nokia E70. |

Hi Alank,
Sorry to hear you broke your screen, looking around I found a replacement from ipaqrepair.co.uk for £140ish
I have a hx4700 with the updated wm5 is just a great PPC. Suggest you repair it because I am not sure you will get used to a small screen mobile phone or a bulky tomtom single use unit. |

Have ditched it in favour of a TT510
Missing it already but not worth paying to get fixed - although Ipaq repairs offered me it for about 140 aswell
Cheers |
