|
|
My newly purchased Quest 1 came with City Select V6. Despite being a used unit when I attempted to register it last night it appears that the previous owner never bothered. Should be a result as, if I understand correctly, I'll qualify for a free mapping upgrade.
On installing Mapsource, when it asked for City Select Disk #1, the installation crashed. Trying to read the disk in Win Explorer shows the files but any attempt to copy to the hard drive (was thinking I could install from there) eventually results in an error. Closer inspection of the disk after much hair pulling etc. revealed a small pin hole in the CD silver layer. This, I assume is a manufacturing fault as the disks appear pristine otherwise even there was no cellophane on the jewel case. Not sure what my position with Garmin will be on this one? Even if they send me the latest update I won't be able to install as I'll apparently need a qualifying product already on my PC. I've emailed Garmin, but don't hold out much hope.
Not sure how the unlock code thing works, are the CDs unique or is it that the unit will only receive maps etc from a copy of Mapsource using it's registered unlock code? If the latter I could probably get away with a copy of disk #1 (the 2nd disk looks fine and the two cab files copy to my PC OK so that seems OK). _________________ Chas

Thanks for the replay Dave.
Yes, with Unit Serial No, 25 digit Un-Lock code and Reg. code. The kit is complete, the disk is just unreadable.
Used the Reg. code to register the product and the resulting screen displayed the codes/numbers I have on the yellow slip. _________________ Chas

That's good news. I'll try to track someone down with V6 full version then, I presume it will need to be the full version rather than an upgrade.
Any volunteers in exchange for postage and disk cost?
Will this request get me banished by the mods?? Everything I've said is true and above board and I don't think a non registered unit could use it, it's only disk 1 of 2 anyway... _________________ Chas

Someone in my bike club copied his version, arrived this morning, installed, created a route to Barcelona (would be nice ) and transfered it to the Quest. So it worked. Now reloading my original mapset etc.
Thanks for your help and advice on this. Now to locate a copy of CS V7 upgrade to fit between the CN V8 that's supposedly on the way from Garmin. _________________ Chas

I am glad you got your V6 disc sorted...You will have to be careful with your upgrade path ..If Garmin give you a free upgrade to V 7 I can't see them extending this to V8 as well and if you go the V8 upgrade way first you won't get a code for V7 so if you want both versions you may have to get your hand in your pocket..I wish you luck!!
