|
|
I just purchased a Garmin i3 from Halfords (last one in the Cowley, Oxford store) at £99.99 and a nice unit it is too. This is the model that ships with a TransFlash card (or whatever it's called) that I presume contains the maps.
It works fine, but I'm a little confused about what (PC) software I'm supposed to have. The box had just a CD-ROM with the USB drivers on it, no DVD with maps or anything else. I have installed WebUpdater and POI Loader on my PC (both downloaded from the Garmin web site), as well as POI Edit (3rd party shareware).
The box came with a yellow piece of paper with an unlock code (25 characters broken into groups of 5 characters), which I haven't needed to use yet. So what's it for? Is there some additional software I can/should/must download from the Garmin website? I keep seeing references to something called MapSource, but there was no DVD for it in the box, and the download page on the Garmin web site looks it you have to pay for it.
Any clarification would be appreciated. |

I'm new too and I don't have the answers unfortunately.
I did register the product and during the process was told I could unlock maps for France using the code bundled with the unit however I got stuck, more here at the bottom of the page... http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=44029&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0.
It seems like you say that you have to have Mapsource to be able to use the unlock code, which didn't come with the unit...I got mine from Comet too.
Think an email to Garmin is in order. |

Mapsource is free, it is usually is included in the 'bundle' as part of the mapping software or in 'Trip & Waypoint Manager'.
It is a method of veiwing your mapping software, seeing your 'tracks' or planning routes, all on the PC. There are many 'updates' to the MapSource programme. |

Although you can download it for free from the Garmin site it does say"WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product." This is where I get stuck as I don't already have a copy of it, wasn't supplied with the i3. |

I explored the CD it only has the drivers.
I received an email from Garmin after registering/unlocking which - shows "Mapsource Product: City Navigator Europe NT+ v8 - Region 2 (Fra)" ...is this mapping software Mapsource itself? I'm sorry if this is a silly question but it's not obvious to me. |

Mapsource is the means to view on the PC, and to install the mapping software[which you do not have]
The easiest way for you to get MapSource and mapping software is to buy on eBay - Garmin MetroGuide Europe v8 [approx. £40]
Then read up on all threads - MetroGuide!!
Do not over-write your SD card. |

OK, so basically Garmin are giving you something that you can't use without having to fork out more dosh... not much of a gift is it
I had read that adding more areas to the card can cause problems so that was something else I was going to ask, thanks for clarifying. |
